In short. Weather channel just screwed up. But leave anyway.

Actually, the Weather Channel is right about this. If you live where it is (6 feet) below sea level, on the coast, where a CAT 4 hurricane (145 mph winds) is going to hit, it's suicidial to willing stay there.

The looters will be out - they ran the canals in south florida last year. Stay locked and loaded, New Orleans.

1) FIRST TO GO
Unprotected areas in Plaquemines Parish could flood first Monday.

2) THE BETSY SCENARIO
Hurricane force winds are projected to top levees in eastern New Orleans, pushing water into the 9th Ward, the Michoud area and even into Mid-City.

3) SLIDELL SOAKED
Large parts of Slidell could be inundated by 10-11 foot storm surges.

4) PUMPED-UP LAKE
Easterly winds in advance of the storm could pump water from Lake Borgne and from Breton and Chandeleur sounds into Lake Pontchartrain, raising the lake’s surface by 12 feet.

5) OVER THE TOP
Waves equal to half the surge height or more would top the surge water and could overtop levees on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain and around Chalmette.

6) GOING ASHORE
As Katrina moves inland and the winds come from the north, the high Lake Pontchartrain waters could stream across St. Charles Parish and turn east along Airline Highway into Kenner.

Yeah, well it should be mentioned, "If you choose to stay, take your chances, and NO EMERGENCY PERSONNEL will endanger their lives to try to save you once the thing has started."

People do have the right to stay, if they want, but then they expect emergency services when the trouble starts.

Hurricane Andrew was a CAT4.

South Dade/Homestead were trashed in 92 by old Andy.

If those folks are in NO, chances are they will drown.
If they survive that, their pieces will be clogged.

Have some sympathy for the affected, please.

A minute ago, WDSU in New Orleans said the evacuation is still voluntary at this point - not mandatory. That may change in a few hours.

Hurricane was no Cat 4. I can attest personally to that.

Andrew was a frikken tornado 60 miles wide.

Out of the five friends of mine in Miami who I have contacted, three are still without electricity. Lots of downed trees and flooding, little structural damage. My parents in Boca just got a lot of wind and some rain.

I would hate to be in Orleans or St. Bernard Parish right now. I'm sure there are some folks who wished that they didn't book that trip to the Beau Rivage in Biloxi right now either.

The Weather Channel is now backing off on the mandatory evac claim. They now say they expect it at any moment.

Was it last year or two ago that the alledged path was to NO and they said get out. A friend of mine and her family were in traffic for almost 18 hours just getting from NO to Houston.

Bad deal ....folks need to gas up, get out and take extra fuel , water , food etc as the trip out can be worse than the storm in some ways......

The government has no business making an evacuation "mandatory". If you choose to stay, you takes your chances.

Well, although I would agree in a perfect world, it might not be necessay, but since the injured would demand medical services, and the dead would have to be buried (most likely at public expense) it quickly becomes a PUBLIC issue.

Its fine to say people should be allowed to make their own decision, but that presumes people are smart enough to do so, and resolute enough to live by their decision and not bring suit the minute a fireman or ambulance doesn't show up.

Those who feel like you are free to baricade themselves in their home. The Police will not expend any resources extracting them.

Andrew was upgraded to a Category 5.

It was CAT5 at land fall.
