Hurricane warnings and watches are posted. Hurricane Katrina continues to strengthen in the Gulf of Mexico. The forecast models continue to converge upon New Orleans. However, all interests in the northern Gulf of Mexico should follow the path of this very large and dangerous storm, and be prepared for a major hurricane landfall. There have been reports of coastal animals leaving in droves for higher ground. Meanwhile, New Orleans continues to suggest that residents evacuate.

Actually, I was surprised to hear the Mayor say that if the storm hits, the levees will not hold.

Plus that...this is MUCH bigger than Camille...will cover more territory. Even if the winds come down to ONLY 130ish..we are going to watch history..

The president is going to be busy. He's speaking at noon about Katrina.

So much for his vacation.

"Heard the NO mayor say that he "knew President Bush would send us everything we need."

I rest my case.

It has been talked about, most recently by the NO mayor on CNN a couple of minutes ago. The Weather Channel has had a map of where the offshore drilling is in the Gulf for several days now.

alot of people have been on these threads for 2 days now, pointing out that not enough was being done early enough to get the evacuations going. you can't just ask everyone to make this decision on their own, government leaders have responsibilities in this area. the computer models have shown good convergence for 24+ hours for a new orleans hit.

FNC just repeated that the Bush statment at 12:30 Eastern is about the Iraq constitution

He couldn't be that dumb.

Looking at the graphics in 1702 and 1703, it reminded me of the way Isabel looked; and remember that right before she came ashore, she "pancaked" and covered a MUCH wider area.

That eye looks mighty close to "stadium effect" to me; this is going to be devastating.

WWL reporting the swath of 150+ mph wind would be around 35 miles wide, the middle 20 miles would "only" have to deal with the north and south eyewall. Traffic improving along secondary routes (Airline-especially). Left lanes on I-10 west open all the way to BR; right lanes diverted up I-55 to the northshore.

I'm not sure the Governor has a clue. I've seen traffic going normally on WDSU's feed. At least Governor Riley in Alabama ordered I-65 South to be closed and used in addition to the other lanes as an evacuation route. Traffic should not be going both directions right now!

I wonder if they will be able to have any kind of video (unmanned of course) of the storm surge hitting the levees, to see if they are going to hold, as this thing comes in.

Here in Florida, supposedly if you build to Miami/Dade code, and take precautions like boarding windows, etc. your home can withstand a Cat 4. Now that's never been tested yet, at least that I know of, but that's what they say.
