There's a new batch of photos from Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison, and these are reportedly far worse than the sickening originals. Naturally, the Pentagon is trying to block their release.
The ACLU filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request in October 2003 to make public 87 photographs and four videos depicting prisoner abuse in Iraq. The Pentagon originally argued that releasing the images would violate the Geneva Convention rights of the detainees; a supreme irony considering that the US originally denied these very prisoners Geneva Convention protections. The ACLU agreed that the Pentagon could black out "identifying characteristics," but a federal judge in New York ruled last week that DoD must explain publicly why it's concealing the images. "By and large, I ruled for public disclosure," said US District Judge Alvin Hellerstein. A final ruling is expected on August 30.
In court proceedings, General Richard Myers argued that releasing the pictures and videos would give aid to the enemy: boosting Al Qaeda recruitment, destabilizing governments in Iraq and Afghanistan and inciting riots throughout the Muslim world. But a number of high-ranking officers and civil libertarians countered by noting that much of what Myers predicts is already occurring on the ground, fueled in large measure by past and present US behavior. "The attacks will continue regardless of whether the photos and tapes are released," testified former US Army Colonel Michael Pheneger. Myers, he said, "mistakes propaganda for motivation."
Last May members of Congress sat in a dark room and viewed the images. Their responses begged for further elaboration. "It was disgusting," said Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson. "There were new ones that we hadn't seen before, and they're bad. I mean there's no doubt about that." Bad enough to show to Congress apparently, but not the American people.

Ya gotta love the hypocrisy of the MSM. These are people who threw a fit when we dared to show the disheveled pictures of Saddam...or even proof that his sons were killed. Some even went as far to claim Geneva violations, even when there were just glimpses of POWs taken in Iraq.
These same humanitarians also decried the use of photos depicting or recreating the events of 9/11...for fear it would inflame emotional hatred and anger against Muslims. These are interesting concerns when you consider that this same MSM had no problem not only running 50+ days of Abu Ghraib stories (and POWs), but is now demanding access (with the ACU) to even more photos so they can intentionally inflame the emotions of Muslims towards America.
The very hatred and anger towards the USA...that the MSM blames on Bush, has been perpetuated by these same people. Whether it was the flushing Koran story or the inclimate temperatures at Gitmo, our media has been directly responsible for the attitudes and perceptions others have for...and against, this country. And they have the nerve to ask why?...They are the reason why.
The Washington Post already had all these "new" photos and videos a year and a half ago.
That's interesting. I hadn't heard that. Why didn't they publish. This one has me nervous, the Government needs to appeal this one.
I find pictures of terrorists being humiliated rather uplifting.
CBS NEWS ONLY TELLS PART OF THE STORY!!!!!!!
Michael Pheneger was ALSO the treasurer of the ACLU in Florida...

"Expert/aka Terrorist Helping Pheneger":
They did publish some of them. Some of the ones we've seen are from this batch (like the one with a dog barking close to a prisoner in an orange jumpsuit), not from the original few leaked via 60 Minutes. Obviously, there wasn't much in this "unreleased" batch the Washington Post saw that was that much different from what was already out there.
"I find pictures of terrorists being humiliated rather uplifting."
At least you enjoy them. I find I just don't give a crap. Show me a picture of troops sawing off a terrorist's head to encourage his associates to cooperate. That might be uplifting.
Can't the President override FOA rulings by Judges on the basis of national security? Clearly our troops will be at heightened risk if these photos are released, which is exactly what the ACLU wants--more dead Americans and a weakened U.S. resolve. Bush has every right to refuse any court order to release the photos. We are a balance of powers. The SCOTUS is NOT the ultimate authority.
It's interesting how for some people the undefined notion of freedom of information trumps the concrete reality that the pictures will undermine the effort in Iraq. Of course, for them there's no tension between the two. Instead, it's a two-fer: the information gets out and the effort is undermined. Actually it's a one-fer with an incidental side effect: the effort is undermined, plus there's the freedom of information thing.
BTW, I wonder if the Geneva Convention rule against showing POWs could be used to block the release of the new pictures?
