Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

I'll start...

I like the sidebar - I like seeing the titles of Breaking News, and other news, when I check My Comments. What I DON'T like is those annoying polls at the top of the sidebar! I don't like polls; I don't particularly like to vote in them, so I don't like having to check one of the little squares just to move the *latest* one to the bottom of the sidebar. Whether we have Opinion Polls on the sidebar or not should be an option *we* can choose in our Preferences. At least I think so. :(

This thread will run for two days, so go ahead; it's your turn...get on *your* soapbox! (but do watch your language!)

As one who served in the Marine Corps then, I appreciated the pictures of the Memorial for Korean veterans...

It was "my" period of history, if you look at my Profile Page, instructing women recruits in classroom subjects during their training at Parris Island.

By the way, we were never allowed to say "Korean War" - the correct term being "Korean Conflict."
I went to the Department of the Navy site - Here -
and it indeed describes it as "Korean Conflict, 1950-1954."

The difference is Congress never made a formal "war declaration;"
but a war by any other name remains the same..:))

My husband served there also, and after fighting the length of Korea from Pusan to Seoul, their Marine Corps positions overrun at night by thousands of drugged up, bugle blaring Chinese (one night he survived by 'playing possum' in the frozen mud as he was stabbed 3 times on his trunk with a bayonet); was captured near Seoul - escaped and captured again - and spent terrible time in North Korea as a POW.

We still weep watching that old movie with the POWs walking back over the bridge at the 38th Parallel when the truce was declared...he was one of those boys...

It was more than 20 years before he could speak openly of all that, but he had overcome it, and served a year in Southeast Asia in '67-'68 fighting communists all over Vietnam and Thailand (even once for 3 days dropped in the jungle with his Strike Team in North Vietnam looking for a downed F-111), including the Tet Offensive and Da Nang.

The truly sad thing is how politicized both the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War became, totally obscuring the fact communism was spreading like a cancer throughout Asia as well as Europe, and simply "HAD" to be stopped there.

It was the politicians rather than the military who did not allow our forces to win - as they could have done.

Today, none of this history is properly conveyed to the generations - if mentioned at all except as in a derogatory fashion.
We were not aggressors/conquerors, but were trying to liberate the oppressed and stop the spread of communism that steadily threatened to devour the globe.

The liberals/Democrats have caused America almost as much grief as our named 'enemies.'
