SMOKERS NOT WELCOME AT WINTHROP BEACH, Maine - Then post a sign!
Maine Smokers Rights ^ | 7-16-05 | D. Brennan

What's up in the town of Winthrop, Maine? SMOKERS NOT WELCOME AT WINTHROP BEACH!

Winthrop proves smoking is not a health issue at all.  But it's all about CON T R O L!

7-16-05 - I was notified of the ridiculous treatment given to one family just because a family member was smoking.

A cop approached the family and told them they would have to leave because this was a "no smoking beach."  The family, as you can see, is not "on" the beach, but on the grassy area.  There were no signs stating that the area was smoke free.  The cop told them that there was a sign, but it was now "gone."

Who pays for the care of Winthrop Beach?  The taxpayers?  People in Maine who smoke are paying well above their fair share of taxes.  Tax payers are also paying for this "cop," who evidently had nothing better to do then harass a family because one of the adults  was smoking.

Rule #11:  Trash, debris or cigarette butts must be placed in trash containers.

The only signs that were posted.  If Winthrop wants a smoke free beach, they need to get their act together and POST said signs!  NOW!

Well, maybe a bit about health? There've been a couple of times at the beach when I've stepped on a lit cigarette and burned my foot. I can't believe I'm the only one.

I have to run, and don't have time to get involved in the discussion on this thread, but just wanted to state that I've also had mewzilla's "cigarette foot burning experience" happen to me a few times while growing up on CT and RI beaches... I've only skimmed this thread, but saw a post where someone stated "I've never heard of that before".

I remember - from the time I was a kid to a young adult - seeing hundreds of cigarette butts strewn over beaches or buried in the sand on various CT/RI beaches, and occasionally stepping on a still-lit one... Not everyone is responsible about disposing their cigarette butts, unfortunately.

It is the towns ordinance.

Don't towns have the ability to determine where smoking is allowed?

BBQ must be banned for the chilllrrruuuuunnnnn! Several reasons pop into my head for the banning of BBQ.
1) Other's right to breath smoke free air is taken from them.
2) It causes obesity in children.
3) Sometimes BBQ activities are associated with litter.
4) Many people find the smell of burning flesh offensive.
5) Fights break out between the "dry" and the "wet".
6) Some religeons find Pork offensive, and often pork is used in BBQ.
7) Bones can be used as weapons.
8) Smoke can not be confined to your own space.
9) It causes the state budgets to be over run with obesity related health problems.
10) Only pro-BBQers would consider a BBQ ban unfair and they are low class redneck junkies!

Therefore, we must all work together to ban BBQ's!

If there's no smoking then why does #11 on the sign say to put all cigarette butts in the trash containers.

The cop told the family that there had been a no smoking on beach sign, but it had disappeared. Can't fight City Hall, so I guess we have to take the cops word, right?

Why are you not equally concerned with the ban on bikes. Oh..they are not affecting you. Smokers have only one selfish interest when it comes to screaming about rights.

What are you talking about!  Have you ever tried to ride a bike in sand???

And I am sure bike trails are provided.  Why would anyone want a bike on a beach?  Doesn't make sense to me.

The average life span of a homosexual is 42 years. The life span of a smoker is 62 and up. Death by smoking is never a guarantee. So, if you want to commit suicide, don't start to smoke. More people die of other causes in their old age then what they do if they just smoke.

That's right!

So tell Bald-assi if he were REALLY concerned about public health, he'd start there!

Apples and oranges.

Sounds like a good fight for you.

Who would want to ride bikes on the beach anyway?  Ever try to ride a bike on sand?

No, you are wrong. I checked their charter and the charter gives the authority to the council.

I've paddled around in the water with a drink in one hand and a cigarette in the other.  Yes.

And I don't even know why I am responding to you.  You are just trying to goad me into an argument and I won't fall for it.  Others can see your asinine remarks, so I really don't need to point them out.

Excuse me while I ignore you Jeannine.

Some folks ride bikes on beach.

In fact its a popular sport for kids to take old bikes and ride theme straight into the water. shouldn't you be outraged they cannot ride their bikes? its legal.
