Paul Volcker says he and his U.N. Oil-for-Food gumshoes are "urgently investigating" new evidence that Secretary-General Kofi Annan knew a lot more than he's let on about the lucrative contract awarded to a company, Cotecna, that had retained his son Kojo.
We can understand Volcker's sense of urgency because if a newly uncovered memo is accurate, it completely undercuts the most important finding of his Independent Inquiry Committee report three months ago.
The Volcker group said that no evidence linked Annan to the UN's multimillion-dollar deal with Cotecna. But the memo, first disclosed by The NY Times, looks to be just that.
It's dated Dec. 4, 1998 one week before the firm got the contract. In it, Cotecna VP Michael Wilson a friend of both Kofi Annan and his son Kojo writes that he'd recently had "brief discussions with the SG and his entourage" about the contract. And that Kofi & Co. advised him that "we could count on their support."
.....part of the memo suggests strongly that Kojo Annan was present at the summit of Francophone leaders where the meeting with his father took place......
When word of the Kojo Annan connection was first published by a London newspaper, the secretary-general ordered a one-day superficial inquiry that concluded falsely that the younger Annan had left the company.
Does the memo, reportedly an accidental find that was turned over to congressional probers, constitute a smoking gun that will conclusively disprove Kofi Annan's protestations of innocence in what rapidly is shaping up as the world's worst political-financial scandal?
This much is clear: Volcker's insistence in March that there was no "documentary evidence" of Kofi Annan's involvement in helping Cotecna get the contract is now in the words of the Watergate-era Nixon White House inoperative.

I hope he'll be another Jean Kirkpatrick or Pay Moynihan, and give that lurking of thieves and dictators the short shrift they deserve. They are nothing but robbers in expensive suits.
***I'm more inclined to think his name is George. But I also figure that the list of suspects is a very long one...****
Oh yeah, SURE, the NY Times would just accidentally discover that memo to help "George." /S
The more the rats whined about Bolton, the more they gave him a mandate, if only he didn't get intimidated by them.
Pray for W and Our Troops
"Ted Kennedy will be out there front and center lecturing us about the proper way to park cars..."
ROFL!
Volcker and Kofi are hand in glove concerning no revelation of wrong doing at the U.N. by Kofi or any of his friends!
Volcker's inqueries into his buddy Kofi's involvement with lying and stealing during his tenure at the U.N. is a joke so go ahead and laugh because that is what is happening among Kofi's crowd of perpetrators!
The U.N. is a filthy pit of self-agrandizement and always has been!
Kofi is a weasel and so is the horse he rode in on!
You mean like off a bridge and into the drink? LOL!
(Or is that into the drink and off a bridge?)
.....Let's hope we got him. He's a slippery one!....
Even if true, what can be done? He is immune from prosecution and with double thick rhinocerous hide can't be wounded.
The damage is irrreversable and nothing can be done to undo the actions.
There is only one recourse...... send in John Bolton as point man on a house destroying mission. Destroy the whole place and then rebuild.
.
I do think that this needs to move from investigating committees to prosecution. Discovery in the Bay Oil case will push the process further. This memo smells like a plea bargain to me, a kind of get out of jail, free card. Cotechna not willing to take a hit for Kofi Anan.
The U.N., a crime syndicate operating under the guise of being the conscience of the world.
It will be interesting to see how the MSM handles this today.
The accident was in it being missed in the UN's months long shredding party when it became clear Saddam was going to be taken out....
.....and Kojo can handle the DNC's "Diversity Vote Caucus".....
The OFF scandal---bad as it is---is just the tip of the iceberg.
KILL THE FILLIBUSTER! WE NEED BOLTON IN THE U.N. NOW!
