[history]
Newsweek's false, retracted story about American guards flushing the Koran down a toilet at Guantanamo doesn't necessarily mean the magazine's staff hates America or Bush, or wants us to lose in Iraq. To be charitable, let's just chalk that one up to sloppy journalism.
But I'm at a loss to explain this, from the February 2 issue of Newsweek's Japanese edition:
As you can see, the cover story shows an American flag, dirtied and tossed in a trash can, its staff snapped in two. The large white text reads, "Amerika ga shinda hi", which translates to "The day America died."
The equivalent international edition of Newsweek, the January 31 issue, featured a picture of Bush on the cover, with the caption "America Leads ...But is Anyone Following?": Both of the above editions featured a cover-story article by Andrew Moravcsik, titled "Dream on, America". (This was translated into Japanese as "Yume no kuni Amerika ga kuchihateru toki", which is even harsher; it means, roughly, "America, the dream country, is rotting away".) According to Newsweek itself, the article described "the world's rejection of the American way of life."
Moravcsik's article did not run in the American edition of that same issue. The cover was also a bit different. It featured Hilary Swank, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jamie Foxx, with the title "Oscar Confidential:
If you look carefully, you'll see that one of the articles from the other two editions is mentioned in a small blurb at the top: Fareed Zakaria's "High Hopes, Hard Facts" here billed as "A reality check on Bush & 'Freedom'". Sure, they put scare quotes around "Freedom", but pretty tame stuff, all things considered.
It's one thing for Newsweek to actively promote the notion that America is a "dead", "rotting" country overseas. But it's quite another thing indeed to hide those efforts from its American readers. If Newsweek really thinks America is dead, and our flag belongs in the trash, why won't it tell us?
If I were to offer Newsweek a suggestion, it would be this: Any story or cover you're ashamed to run in America probably shouldn't be used in other countries, either. Source

Say, Japan, do August 6th and 9th have any significance for you? Actually, it's not Japan's fault ... it's Newsweek's.

You're one wicked ol' Grampa. If the staff of Newsweak See that, you can bet they'll have a good story out tommorow.

This is how what passes for thought processes by the left go: When things aren't going their way, they implore us to "move on", or to "look inward", or some other catchy phrase that might have warmed hearts in the '70's, but don't do much for things now.
Ever striving to rewrite history, even that which happened days, weeks or months ago, they never seem to implore us to "think for ourselves", or 'view history through a colorless prism" or some other exercise that will sharpen one's mental acuity.
No, they'd much rather have us feel rather than think. More importantly, they want us to "feel" as they do, thereby making their tasks of exercising dominion over us that much easier.
Working harder than ever to stem the rising tide of conservatism both nationally and internationally, the leftists (sorry, I can't bring myself to capitalize it) find themselves in a most unenviable quandary, castigating the Center and the Right for attempting what they had to do to thrust things down our throats a mere 20-odd years ago (changing the Senate rules).
Further, efforts to portray this change in a light of "never been done before" are hampered by the very reality that they themselves forced this about by doing that which had never been done before - namely, wholesale filibustering of nominees by a sitting president.
But this thread is not about the filibuster. It's about the duplicity and mendacity of the left and it's pimps in the media, academia and the entertainment industry.
Having lost elections by an ever-increasing margin with the passing of the years, and with little prospect of seeing that change, except in terms of increasing degree, we are left with a potpourri of adult crybabies who seem convinced if they can scream just a little bit louder, and for a little bit longer, they can successfully negate the effects of recent elections.
If it doesn't bring immediate benefits on the home front, why then, stir up passions amongst our betters overseas, whose pervasive influence back here in Jesusland will surely convince these low-life rednecks of the red states that they must indeed be wrong, and will thus come to "feel" exactly as we do!
Dispirited by a new-found spine in opponents intent on using and effecting the rules they themselves have written and used with utter disdain for so many years, the left now wallows in a pigsty of self-pity, shocked and alarmed we are not joining them!
I can not speak for anyone else here. Suffice it to say, I will not "move on", nor will I "look inward" on these issues that affect not only us, but our future generations.
There is a time and a place for serious introspection. Deciding whether or not Newsweak's slander on this nation and it's people merits it is not one of them.

Moravcsik and his fellow Hungarian crony Soros are buddy buddy. Academia is awash with socialist scum spewing their putrid propaganda in the Newsweeks of the world...The socialist machine is working overtime to spread their pathological trash. Just heard that Chavez is starting his version of Jazeera in Latin America.

It would appear here that some are at a loss to understand the situation, so let me add a bit of clarity. WPO's shareholders didn't buy the stock out of patriotism, they bought it out of capitalism. WPO (and by extention Newsweek, Inc.) have a responsibility to show dollars to their shareholders. They do that the old fashioned way by selling copy and selling advertisments in those copies. A cover story about an American flag in the garbage can isn't going to move a whole lot of copy stateside. Conversely, I'm sure it sold like cold beer on a hot day elswhere. People in the states would rather read about the oscars. There's a reason WPO earns $30+/share. It's not because they're stupid.
