Who knew? First lady Laura Bush took over the podium from her husband at Saturday night's annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner and knocked 'em dead, keeping Washington's most powerful politicos in stitches as she worked the ballroom like a seasoned stand-up comic.

Although Washington's movers and shakers laughed at Mrs. Bush's performance, some in the press woke up with a Sunday morning hangover and began to criticize her monologue as immodest at best and downright bawdy at worst.
"Laura Bush cracks risque jokes at the White House Correspondents' dinner," sniffed Agence France-Presse. CNN reporter Elaine Quijano, who attended the dinner, also apparently had her sensibilities scarred by some of the first lady's quips.
"In some respects, I think for some folks it was a little shocking because she kind of crossed the line a little bit in some people's minds," she said.
"It was very risque," the Nation's David Korn said yesterday on Fox News. "I was wondering what the social conservatives and James Dobson had to say about all these jokes that were laced with sexual innuendo. Not a very family-values-type speech. I'm not sure I want to explain a lot of those jokes to my 4-year-old."
Eyebrows were raised by the first lady's bit about the president's ranching skills, which Mrs. Bush said her husband lacked because the elite schools he attended, Andover and Yale, "don't have a real strong ranching program."
She then added: "He's learned a lot about ranching since that first year when he tried to milk the horse. What's worse, it was a male horse."
The crowd howled. The joke, a female Associated Press reporter said, "had women giggling in the bathroom."

It would have been LESS risque in 1807 because even more people would have lived around livestock, and would have actually GOTTEN the point of the joke... not have stupidly tried to make something sexual out of it!!
Don't you think this has been posted enough?
No. I was flamed. I knew I would be. I still will be flamed. I was told that I was the gutter mind. That I "hate" George and Laura Bush. That I have some other agenda. That my panties are in a wad. That my collar is buttoned too tight. That I'm a puritan. Etc. Etc. I expected that. I donned by asbestos suit. The flames don't bother me. What does bother me is the double standard here. Clearly, what Laura Bush said was not the kind of thing that should be coming from a First Lady. If Hillary Clinton had made these identical remarks at an identical event everyone on Free Republic would rip her apart for it. Laura Bush makes the bawdy jokes and not only are they not bawdy, but they are "cultured" and actually a good thing according to many. Horse nipples!
I never said the jokes weren't funny, I said they were inappropriate coming from her. It is amazing how many are so capable of defending the indefensible. This whole imbroglio is proof positive of how our society has coarsened and is more accepting of vulgarity - even among conservative Republicans.
We're just not the prigs that you all appear to be.
Right on, Howlin my man! Born again, Bible-believing Charismatic Christian here, and I can think of things far worse than the self-deprecating standup comedy of Laura Bush. Yes, it's coming to me now...something about logs and specks...
his Mom has a great sense of humor as well..remember when they played the trick on her that she was to be questioned by authorities for porn on her computer?? Was hilarious..fun humor in a fun family.
I'll bet the ranch you don't know a thing about George OR Laura Bush.
She talks about how exciting and fun he has made her life all the time.............in fact, she even said it at the dinner.
You are clueless.
It makes the same amount of sense as the other responses you made. Have a nice day discussing the heavy duty subject matter of risque jokes by politicians wives.
Really? You aren't aware that it is Laura Bush's influence that is credited for some of the billions of dollars thrown down the toilet of our "education" and "arts" establishments?
Brilliant comments.
Don't play the self-righteous martyr, Spiff. What you've said about Laura has been disgusting.
How is still being on this thread "moving on?"
I don't continue and continue bashing, calling my small group of friends to do the same, etc
Where did anybody do that?
People are on to the routine and are sick of it.
Well, we all certainly know YOU are, as you continue to post that same mantra on every thread, no matter who might disagree with you, no matter what the subject.
I see the usual suspects have shown up to bash Christians. While I did watch the show and laughed out loud, I must say that if Hillary or any Dem. wife of the Pres., had said some of the things Laura said, many of us would be saying things like, "typical Dem. behavior, trashy, etc...". Even some of the usual suspects who like to bash Christians.
I have no problem with people disagreeing about the show. Some will like it, (I know Hollywood loved it!!), some won't like it. But I get so sick and tired of the Christian bashing.
As for the "small group remark," you keep telling yourself that; it's a rather LARGE group of people who are standing up the the unfounded, ill-informed, and mean-spirited remarks on this thread.
Wow. When you want to convince a Christian of your point of view, be sure to quote Scripture out of context in an insulting manner and then edit it. Brilliant strategy.
It's interesting to see that you think of yourself as God in this scenario.
It's also interesting to see that you have obliquely accused me of lying, even though I haven't.
Why would I "disavow myself" of something I never said or implied?
You might want to take up onion sucking if your that bothered.
You're showing your ignorance of the Bush family; she's been calling him that for years.
Oh, I'm sorry. Are we not being as social aware and globally minded as you would like? Geez, aren't you full of yourself? Can't we exercise our freedom of speech and discuss what we want? You're the one who interjected Social Security in this thread. So start your own thread if you don't like the fact that there are others who would like to discuss something different. Oh, I'm sorry ... I forgot ... HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Excuse me.
"You don't get it. I posted something critical about it and I was attacked. I like George and Laura Bush. They've brought dignity back to the White House and are good people. However, I still reserve the right to point out that Laura made an error in judgement by telling suck off-color jokes. Those of us offended by her bawdiness on this occasion have been beaten bloody on these threads. I'm not starting a witch hunt, I just pointed out that her jokes were not acceptable coming from a First Lady."
You say "attacked", "beaten bloody", "witch hunt"? I don't know you Spiff, but either you are (1) a liberal/Democrat: you're a wimp - 'nuff said; (2) you are a centrist/moderate: still a wimp - 'nuff said; (3) you are a conservative/Republican: you give conservative/Republicans a bad name. I'm glad I am not in your skin.
