Baptist church 'fake pope' sign attracting attention, criticism By JEANNINE F. HUNTER, hunter@knews.com April 13, 2005

NEWPORT, Tenn. - Two days after being posted, a church marquee message that questions the purpose of the papacy is still attracting attention in this small community.

"What I am trying to do is to let people know there's only one way to heaven through Jesus Christ," said the Rev. Cline Franklin, pastor of Hilltop Baptist Church. "There's no need for help. God sent his son, Jesus Christ. We're all priests if we're saved. I don't need to go to anybody else to pray."

The sign's side facing Broadway, the main thoroughfare in Newport, reads, "No truth, No hope Following a hell-bound pope!" On the other side, facing the church parking lot, it reads: "False hope in a fake pope."

The message appeared days after Pope John Paul II's funeral last week.

"It is unfortunate when it comes from within the Christian church. It's really sad," said the Rev. Dan Whitman, 54, pastor of Newport's Good Shepherd Catholic parish and Holy Trinity parish in Jefferson City. "You learn how to deal with it and pray not to be that way yourself."

It does not reflect mainstream Baptist thought, said Dr. Merrill "Mel" Hawkins, associate professor of religion and director of the Center for Baptist Studies at Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City.

"When you see signs like that, they are almost like relics or artifacts of a bygone era," Hawkins said.

He spoke about animus between Protestants and Catholics persisting after the Protestant Reformation and for centuries, during which "harsh things were said, couched within misperceptions, misunderstandings."

Among the major misperceptions is that Catholics "venerate the pope on the same level as Jesus," Hawkins said, and that "the pope is connected to their salvation in place of Jesus Christ."

Catholics make up about 12 percent of the population in the South.

"Catholics are a minority faith in the South, and there's often bias toward minority religious communities because people don't understand," he said.

James Gaddis, a lay speaker who also chairs the board at First United Methodist Church, said he had not seen the sign but had heard about it.

"I understand that it's very degrading," he said. "I think it's tragic that any church group would stoop to this posture."

Following Tuesday night's council meeting, Newport Mayor Roland Dykes Jr. said he was a little saddened by the message.

"It doesn't behoove any of us to determine who is going to heaven or hell. I think the pope is a highly, highly respected person," he said.

Franklin's church is a five-year-old independent Baptist church. When asked what the message meant, he said: "What does 'pope' mean? It means father. We have a heavenly father, and the Bible says we shall call no man a father. "

He said people have been driving by or taking pictures or calling to share their views. He said the intent was not to offend Catholics and people are misunderstanding the sign.

If it is true that we can't know whether we are saved, then we have to accept it.

Well.....

...if you could read and understand the Scriptures, you might have come across these verses.............

NIV 1 John 2:12-14
 12.  I write to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.
 13.  I write to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I write to you, dear children, because you have known the Father.
 14.  I write to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one.

NIV 1 John 2:20-21
One, and all of you know the truth.
I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth.

NIV 1 John 5:13
I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.
I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.
I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.
I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.
I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.
I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know!!!!! that you have eternal life.

In 495 Pope Gelasius issued a decree entitled Decretum de Libris Canonicis Ecclesiastics et Apocryphis which included anyone who taught the Assumption to be called a heretic.

This is simply false. There is no record that Pope Gelasius ever decreed that anyone who taught the Assumption is a heretic.

Mary's Assumption was not official Church dogma until 1950. Why did it take over 1900 years for the "infallibility" to settle in? And why did it become dogma based on writings not believed by Church Fathers that lived closer to the actual events?

"Juvenal, Bishop of Jerusalem at the Council of Chalcedon (451 AD) made known to the Emperor Marcian and [his Empress] Pulcharia, who wished to possess the body of the Mother of God, that Mary died in the presence of all the Apostles and that her tomb, when opened upon the request of St. Thomas, was found empty; wherefrom the Apostles concluded that the body was taken up to Heaven." (Homily on the Dormition, PG 96)"

Surely you can't be unaware of all the verses on the other side of this issue. This is why proof-texting is just Egoism, finding what "I" want to believe, and asserting it.

Explain the fact no one from within the Church taught the Assumption for over 5 centuries. Also explain the fact that the first person within the Church (Juvenal)lifted it from a book that was banned by Pope Gelasius who declared it a Gnostic legend. Yes it was a heretical book since it did not pass the Church Fathers standards, yet given time the story becomes dogma. No consistency there.

You would think the Assumption was a very important biblical event. Yet it takes 1900 years to be official Church dogma, give me a break. Again, how can Church dogma which is supposedly infallible promote teachings which the early Church condemned as heretical?

Transitus Beatae Mariae was banned material and guess where your Juvenal got it from, a book deemed as gnostic literature by Pope Gelasius.

That's an argument from silence. Explain why there is not, and has never been, a "tomb of Mary".

Also explain the fact that the first person within the Church (Juvenal)lifted it from a book that was banned by Pope Gelasius

That is simply false. Prove that Juvenal got this from a Gnostic legend.

You would think the Assumption was a very important biblical event. Yet it takes 1900 years to be official Church dogma, give me a break.

"Give me a break" is not a refutation. If you understand how doctrine developes (See Newman's _An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine_), you would see that there is no problem here.

Transitus Beatae Mariae was banned material

Prove that TBM was banned because it contained the doctrine of the Assumption.

BriarBey,

If you want to understand other positions, rather than just mock them and ridicule them without understanding them, then you need to read some Catholic apologetics. There's lots of books out there. Read books by Scott Hahn, Dave Armstrong, Patrick Madrid, Karl Keating's "Catholicism and Fundamentalism", Stephen Ray's "Upon This Rock", John Henry Newman's "Apologia Pro Vita Sui" and his "An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine", Robert Sungenis's "Not by Scripture Alone", Louis Bouyer's "The Spirit and Forms of Protestantism", and many more. See if you can refute the evidence and argumentation therein. Prove that all these books are wholly mistaken. If you can, then stay right where you are (and publish your refutation so that you can rescue Catholics the world over). But if you can't, then come home to Rome. It is far too easy to attack what you don't understand.

Thanks for the ping!

from the article..."There's no need for help. God sent his son, Jesus Christ. We're all priests if we're saved. I don't need to go to anybody else to pray."

I agree. If we all bow to the Pope or admire and cling to his words, then we are creating an "other Christ".

The Pope, especially an ex-Hitler's Youth will NEVER speak for me.

God may forgive him, but the world must never forgive the horror of Hitler's Regime.

Out of respect for those who suffered, we must remember to Never Forget.

Perhaps she got wiped out, along with thousands of others, when the Romans finally had enough and destroyed Jerusalem again...

But if you can't, then come home to Rome.

Isn't that the call to the world and hasn't that been the whole intent of the counter reformation or The Council of Trent? I will die before I tie myself to a Harlot and not Christ.

LOOK....LOOK HOW CLOSE THEY ARE!!! There in lies the deception!!

YOU better know your scripture and understand the STRONG DELUSION THAT GOD SENDS will take discernment and deep spiritual understanding. God is going to allow men to believe this is a holy and good thing joining the world back to Rome. Because of your wicked hearts, idolatry, pride, lust, murder........you will be drawn to HER or stay with HER and go with HER to destruction!!

God warned about staying on your milk bottles TO LONG....TIME TO EAT SOME MEAT!!

Jesus said...there would come a time when people would thinking killing his, was doing the world a favor. We ARE CHRISTS!!! We will not go with this false peace and unity that is coming. We will be viewed as an enemy to humanity because we WILL NOT return to Rome the Mother Church..the Queen of Heaven who says "I am not a widow, and I will never mourn!!!"....I've never been part of her anyway!!!!

I will die before I tie myself to a Harlot and not Christ.

Me too. The Church is not a "Harlot". It is Christ's body on earth.

You assume that the "harlot" described in Revelations is the Catholic Church. Who made you the authoritative interpreter of the book of Revelation? Again, your individualism makes you think that you get to determine which books belong to Scripture, and what Scripture teaches. But you don't have that authority. You don't get to be the definitive word on what Scripture teaches. That authority was given to the Apostles, and they gave it to the bishops. In other words, the authority to interpret Scripture belongs to the authorities of the Church. And you are not one of them.

I didn't write the Scriptures. So, if the Scriptures make people uncomfortable about the state of their souls, so be it. The purpose of Christianity is not to make us comfortable.

Thanks A8 for the chat, but it just seems like too much rationalization. It leaves too many questions. Why is Jesus related to David through Joseph also? I do not believe that Mary and Jesus had to share flesh.

For Jesus to fulfil prophesy, he needed to be born of a virgin, and he needed to come from David's family.

This is the true common faith. This is what every christians should be able to proclaim.

If you want to add special qualities to Mary, don't expect me at the communion table. I believe in closed communion within my synod. (We've excommunicated everyone! But of course we acknowledge salvation outside our synod.)

The precision of the RCC rationalizations astound me. Check out Paul's statement

2 Corinthians 12:2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven--whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows.

About Mystical Mary... "I do not know, God knows."

If you want to reunite Christianity, get everyone to agree on a creed, not have everyone agree about dogma. Mary was given one line in the Nicene Creed. Salvation requires no adittional belefs.

There can be no reunion amoung Christianity until the RCC comes to the same conclusion Peter came to

Acts 10:34
Then Peter began to speak: "I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism

I can not accept secret or developmental doctrine. Neither can I accepts a single standard for all christianity that exceeds Scriptures (and the creeds).

Where is Mary's body? Probably where John buried her, or she was assumed. Either way no mention of this by John or anyother Apostle. I would venture to say John would have wrote something about the assumption if true.

XVI).
Ipseque a Petro apostolo in Aegyptum directus, verbum veritatis praedicavit, et gloriosum consummavit martyrium.
Tertia vero sedes apud Antiochiam ejusdem beatissimi Petri apostoli nomine habetur honorabilis, eo quod illic priusquam Romam venisset habitavit, et illic primum nomen Christianorum novellae gentis exortum est.

III.

Sanctam synodum Constantinopolitanam, mediante Theodosio seniore Augusto, in qua Macedonius haereticus debitam damnationem excepit.

Item opuscula B. Gregorii Nazianzeni episcopi.
Item opuscula B. Basilii cappadociae episcopi.
Item opuscula B. Athanasii Alexandrini episcopi.
Item opuscula B. Cyrilli Alexandrini episcopi.
Item opuscula beati Joannis Constantinopolitani episcopi.

Item opuscula B. Ambrosii Mediolanensis episcopi.
Item opuscula B. Augustini Hipponensis [al. Hipponeregiensis] episcopi.
Item opuscula B. Hieronymi presbyteri.
Item opuscula B. Prosperi viri religiosissimi.
Item Orosium virum eruditissimum collaudamus: quia valde nobis necessariam adversus paganorum calumnias dignam ordinavit historiam miraque brevitate contexuit.

Nothing in this document shows that Juvenal got his info from 'de Transitu'. You keep asserting that, but without any evidence to substantiate your claim. Nor does this document in any place condemn as heresy the doctrine of the Assumption.

Do you so desparately want to believe that Roman Catholicism is false, that you just make up historical information?
