Here in the neighborhood, most everybodies lawns are showing near the houses and the middles. Places where the blown snow was heaped onto the lawn edges from the driveways and near mailboxes is still a couple feet deep.

Next sunrise: 6:45 a.m.
Next sunset: 9:16 p.m.

We gain about 5 minutes a day of sunshine til June 21st. then we start losing 5 minutes a day.

Further north, Barrow, the sun stays above the horizon from mid November to mid January. Alternately, in winter the sun doesn't come up from mid November to mid January.

Here in Anchorage, in mid June, it doesn't get dark enough for the street lights to come on. I never put my blinds down, but my parents practically have black out curtains. Visitors are always surprised when they look at their watches and realize how late it is.

Cowboy, I'm so sorry to hear you have cancer. Of course I'll say a lot of prayers for you. Among those prayers will be thanks for the advances in medicine in recent years, and that you get the full benefit of those advances. God must know how valuable you are to us here, but I'll be sure and mention it anyway.

Thanks.

On a related note, I've always gotten a kick of of this short joke, attributed to Steve Wright:

"When I die I want to go peacefully in my sleep, like my grandfather. Not screaming in terror like his passengers."
