Lost chance for Nobel Peace Prize for John Paul 2005-04-09, 10:16
Polish foreign minister Adam Rotfeld has expressed regret that John Paul II had not been honored with the Nobel Peace Prize.
He stated there has not been another person more worthy of such recognition as the late Pontiff. The head of Polish diplomacy stated John Paul II had contributed as no-one else to peaceful transformations in today's world, especially in Central and Eastern Europe. Minister Rotfeld underscored that the whole pontificate of the Polish born pope had been a continuous peace building process. He reminded that John Paul II had been absolutely against the military operation in Iraq and that only thanks to his efforts the Muslim community has not perceived the intervention in terms of war between the Christian world and Islam.

To be perfectly honest, a Nobel Peace Prize is beneath John Paul II. Let's just take a look at some previous recipients to illustrate my point: Jimmy Carter, Kofi Anan, YASSER ARAFAT,.... Need I say more?

The Peace Prize would have been irrelevant anyway. 2 billion plus people have just demonstrated that they know what the man did and approve.
Offhand, I can't think of what any Nobel Peace Prize winner did, or how it was significant in the long term. I do know what Ronald Reagan, John Paul II, and Margaret Thatcher did and I know its significance. I'm pretty sure I'm in good company (about 2 billion other people) in being able to say that.

Defeating communism is not something the Nobel committee would honor.

Couldn't agree with you more. I don't know why they've never awarded one to Castro or Idi Amin.

Nobel Prizes are not awarded posthumously.

Of course you're right.
But - on the other hand - I remember I read some article about this issue some time ago. At it was written there, that if the Pope had been asked to accept a Nobel Peace Prize he wouldn't deny.
And those morons in Oslo gave it to some African tree planter (with all respect doue to tree planters).

As has been pointed out, he didn't deserve it. The Nobel Peace Prize is reserved for the anti-freedom crowd.

Don't exaggerate.
Lech Walesa got it in 1983 - surely not for representing anti-freedom crowd.

"To be perfectly honest, a Nobel Peace Prize is beneath John Paul II. Let's just take a look at some previous recipients to illustrate my point: Jimmy Carter, Kofi Anan, YASSER ARAFAT,.... Nevertheless, this Pope deserves the honor. At least if would help retrieve the reputation of the prize.

Guess we will just have to settle for sainthood.

evil right wingers dont get peace prizes. They only give them to dimwits who think the AIDS virus is a conspiracy to kill black people. I agree, I would be insulted if i won

Frankly, I don't know how she got through the screening process since she was SO pro-life!

I'm pretty confident Alfred Nobel would be spinning in his grave if he knew how his name and the prize he founded were being perverted. Over the years it has been given to some truly deserving people; however, this has occurred with increasingly less frequency as the years and decades since Nobel's death pass. There is only little doubt that Nobel is not being comemmorated in the manner he had hoped when he set up the prize.
Sadly this is all too often the case with legacies, inheritances and bequeathals. This coupled with the fact that, "you can't take it with ya'" are the very reasons I intend to spend ALL my money before I go.

Remember, Solidarity (real name Interenterprise Strike Committee) was a trade union federation representing employees of some 20 state-run businesses in Poland. The first of their 21 demands against the communist government was recognition of the Free Trade Union independant of the Communist Party. How could the Left not love a union man?
