Senate backs Alaska oil drilling
BBC ^ | March 16, 2005 | BBC

The US Senate has given its de facto approval to a plan to open up a remote wildlife refuge in the northern state of Alaska to oil drilling.

Senators voted 51-49 against an amendment which would have struck the measure from the federal budget.

The plan has long been a key part of President Bush's energy plan, as a means to reduce US reliance on imports.

I once saw a picture of the Pipe Line that is already there and it had a herd of Caribou feeding under it and another picture of three Grizzly bears walking down the top of the pipe. I wish I had those pictures now to send to the Enviros.

Yeah, the BBC article here has a mountain and says 'much of Alaska is still wilderness". ANWR is on the coastal PLAIN of Alaska. In other words, flat as a pancake.

Thank you!

I was totally confused! LOL
Bottom line, they're going to be able to drill and that's all that matters!

So I guess as a member of the Church of the Painful Truth you don't feel the pain of the caribou? You must be one of those out-of-the-mainstream boobs who think that the painfully high price of oil and the resultant dependence on energy upon a bunch of terrorist misfit nations is a higher priority to fix than worrying about caribou. What's the matter with you?

I just went over there. They are on full tilt. I have never read so much cursing and vileness in my life. What a hoot.

Land Tour with Contiki tour company. From Anchorage to Fairbanks, beyond Polar Circle then south of Anchorage to Kenai Penninsula. Didn't make to "Prince William Sound" and other Southwestern Fjords that cruise ships usually pass through. I would definitely like to go to Alaska again some day.

Not sure but if I had to bet the likely culprits would be little Lincoln from R.I. and the two mavens from Maine.

Hit'em again Hit'em again HARDER HARDER! They are pissed because with a new source of crude available the pipeline won't be torn down.

It is a beautiful place. I've been up here about a year and a half. From my office window on a clear day, I can see the Chugach Mountain Range, a couple of volcanoes and Mount McKinley. But let me assure you, it looks nothing like the barren wasteland of the North Slope.

But what about the poor caribou? Have you no compassion?
(sarc.off)

Caribou Love Drilling!!!

Over four decades of development on the North Slope have shown that caribou can co-exist with development. The Central Arctic Herd, which calves in the Prudhoe Bay and Kuparuk oil fields, has increased from 3,000 animals to more than 23,400 animals.

Oil has an international market, with all sources of supply and all end user demands affecting the world-wide price.

This one addition to world-supply will put slight downward pressure on world prices for oil. If we really want much lower oil prices, then lots more sources of supply have to come on-line.

Alternatively, we could demand less, which would pretty much only occur in a depression economy scenario. Virtually all reasonable conservation measures have been taken. China and India's new demand for oil is a primary driver of recent price increases. I doubt we'll see much letup in demand.

So, unless you hear of many other new sources coming on stream, or we get a world-wide economic depression, get used to relatively high gas prices.

I still think the modern peak price for gas was 1983 in inflation adjusted dollars. So, we're not doing to bad a $2.05, and I'll keep running my V8 quite happily, thank you.

Inouye and Landrieu came around. He had to. Last March I saw gas at .80 cents higher than what I was paying in New York. They must be dying out there now.
She had to as well. Lots of oil interests in Louisiana.
mccain ( Media ) Arizona joined the pukes from Maine.
Inouye gave Coleman cover to vote yes.

Just to brag a bit, I saw this Pipe Line for real ! That's simply incredible engineering marvel. I think it was the first pipe line ever that went above the ground to prevent the heat from pipes to melt the permafrost. Because the poles that support the pipes are still placed on the permafrost, to prevent the heat from melting permafrost there is a chemical process that prevents heat from the inside of pipes coming to the poles and to the permafrost. So you have a full scale engineering feat. It is about 1600 miles in length from Nome to Prudhoe Bay if I remember everything correctly. Our tour operator was Contiki. We also used Northern Alaska Tour Company to travel beyond the Polar Circle for just one day--believe it or not it was very hot there in August.
