The US Senate has given its de facto approval to a plan to open up a remote wildlife refuge in the northern state of Alaska to oil drilling.

Senators voted 51-49 against an amendment which would have struck the measure from the federal budget.

The plan has long been a key part of President Bush's energy plan, as a means to reduce US reliance on imports.

I think it's great ! Finally something is done to reduce the US dependence on the oil from Saudi Arabia and other Islamist theocracies.

I've been in Alaska a few years ago and I became enchanted with the state and its breathtaking beauty. I think most of the Alaskan residents support the measure as long as the proper protections to the environment is provided.

I agree.

Although ANWR will not solve our oil dependency issues, it is a great start.

The last I heard, most Alaskans were in favor of drilling in ANWR.

About farkin' time!

NOW, Eco-wackos of America, do you REAL jobs and watch the drilling companies to detect REAL problems.

This "you can't drill here because you MIGHT cause problems" crapola reall ticks me off.

I cannot believe that the Senate decided against the Jimmy Carter "let's all tighten our belts" approach.

Are they growing a spine?

If you go to www.anwr.org and look at the photo gallery you will see that this isn't exactly the "pristine wilderness" the environmentalists always misrepresent it to be. In the winter it looks about like the surface of the moon. And we're only talking about 2,000 acres. That's less than 4 square miles.

Sure -:) Fortunately we have enough normal people in the the Senate (and in the country I hope -:)) who can use their heads properly once in a while. Certainly Alaska drilling is not the silver bullet. In a long term, perhaps more investment in the public transportation, alternative energy resources research, more carpooling, economic measures to stimulate the production and sales of energy efficient cars and other measures will be needed too to reduce energy independence, but at least it's a good start.

Nope. None at all.

I am a member-in-good-standing of the Church of the Painful Truth.

The painful truth is that rational Americans have given in to the moonbats of our Nation for too long. Time for a sea change.

That is true.

I've heard that in summer the area is soggy and mosquito-ridden.

It's not the typical pictures of snow-capped mountains and verdant green forests that the Sierra Club likes to use.
