Rating the radio talk show hosts
Posted on 03/03/2005 1:31:07 PM PST by EveningStar
Since I retired several months ago, I've had plenty of time to listen to talk radio and I've been able to come up with my own factors for rating some of the hosts.
It is this: Who provides depth and insight and who doesn't?
To me, those who provide depth and insight include: Rush Limbaugh Dennis Prager Michael Medved Larry Elder
Those who fall into the "No **** Sherlock / Captain Obvious to the Rescue" category include: Laura Ingraham Sean Hannity
That's my opinion. What's yours?
TOPICS: Constitution/Conservatism; Culture/Society; Philosophy; Your Opinion/Questions
KEYWORDS: besttalkshowhost; gr8american; hewittnumberone; inmybook; savage; talkradio; talkshowhosts

I have to admit, the couple times I've heard his program, he's pretty easy to listen to and follow. His observations on the radio are well thought out, much like his appearances on H&C during a segment they used to have during the primary election season called "Tuesday's With Bennett".

Well, the two Mikes I can hear here- Medved and Reagan, for starters.
Medved, perhaps because of his being a former left-wing radical, is very adroit at letting dissenting callers hang themselves... he just stands back, asks a few leading questions, and allows them to dig a hole and fall into it. It's quite amusing.
Mike Reagan actually reads legislation, and some of the things he discovers are very informative.
I probably am in agreement more with Ken Hamblin than any other talker-- at least when I could receive his show.
Boortz is informative, but I've disliked him personally ever since he sent me a nasty email telling me "don't you ever email me anything from Free Republic again!"
We used to have a fellow named Jack Christie ( sic ) who had a Libertarian show in the morning, which I liked, but he vanished several years ago.
Rush is of course, the progenitor and archtype of Talk Radio, and I do still listen to him.

After listening to Rush, followed by Hannity, it is fun to listen to Savage warn the 'cool-aid drinkers' to be careful not to blindly follow the Republicans.
I really like his rant on Chief FullOfBull!

"For local, I like KSFO A.M. with Melanie Morgan, Lee (can't remember his last name) and officer Vic. They make my drive in to work go smoothly." You mean Lee Rodgers (or Rogers?)

I would add (for insight)
James Golden (Rush's Bo Snerdley who unfortunately never gets air anymore)
Bob Grant
Steve Malzberg (at least until he moved away from WABC)

Hugh Hewitt saved my sanity during the election. I rate him tops.

Rush is #1.
Then The Kimmer.
Boortz has his moments but I find him stale and whiney after a while and he can be mean spirited. Just my opinion.

Of course since we are rating talk show hosts I would rate Al Franken, Jeanne Grafalo and Randi Rhodes under the floor and beneath the basement.

Yes! Thanks! That was bugging me.
They provide me with info and much-needed laffs on the way to work. I also like when Brian Sussman is on.

Rush's callers are either bots are sufferable fools. I've more than once heard someone sign his praises and how much they love and agree with him only to have him leave the call obviously wondering how in the heck the caller can breathe on their own.
The other thing I've began to notice is how he will switch gears and suddenly go to the phones and have someone ready to talk about that topic. Think about it guys. It's too hard to get through to find someone after a short riff on a topic that 's ready to go. Try it sometimes. These have to be staged calls.

I have listened to Michael Medved & until today, I rather liked him. What did he do to turn you off?
To: BigSkyFreeper
He was one of the stars of the old sci fi, Babylon 5. Married to Andrea Thompson, I believe that's her name. The tall, buxom blond from the first season of Jag and more recently the third season of 24.

Why there should be "talk" on the radio in the first place eludes me.
Why there should be anything on the AM band eludes me further still.
To: Arrowhead1952
No fair putting a picture of her up. Sure, Rush is a cutie pie. Laura is brains and looks all rolled up into one.
