The deadly tsunami could have uncovered the remains of an ancient port city off the coast in southern India.
Archaeologists say they have discovered some stone remains from the coast close to India's famous beachfront Mahabalipuram temple in Tamil Nadu state following the 26 December tsunami.
They believe that the "structures" could be the remains of an ancient and once-flourishing port city in the area housing the famous 1200-year-old rock-hewn temple.
Three pieces of remains, which include a granite lion, were found buried in the sand after the coastline receded in the area after the tsunami struck.
Undersea remains
"They could be part of the small seaport city which existed here before water engulfed them. They could be part of a temple or a building. We are investigating," says T Sathiamurthy of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
Archaeologists say that the stone remains date back to 7th Century AD and are nearly 6ft tall.
They have elaborate engravings of the kind that are found in the Mahabalipuram temple.
The temple, which is a World Heritage site, represents some of the earliest-known examples of Dravidian architecture dating back to 7th Century AD.
The monument also has gigantic open air reliefs hewn out from granite.
The bronze Buddha which floated up the coast at Kalapakkam
The tsunami waves have also helped the archaeologists in desilting one such relief which had been covered with sand for ages.
A half-completed rock relief of an elephant got "naturally desilted" by the ferocious waves and is now drawing large crowds at this popular tourist destination.
For the past three years, archaeologists working with divers from India and England have found the remnants of the ancient port.
Archaeologists say they had done underwater surveys 1 km into the sea from the temple and found some undersea remains.
Legend
The myths of Mahabalipuram were first set down in writing by British traveller J Goldingham, who visited the South Indian coastal town in 1798, at which time it was known to sailors as the Seven Pagodas.
The myths speak of six temples submerged beneath the waves with the seventh temple still standing on the seashore.
The myths also state that a large city which once stood on the site was so beautiful the gods became jealous and sent a flood that swallowed it up entirely in a single day.
The tsunami has also washed up a 9 inch-tall bronze Buddha on the coast off Kalapakkam in the state.
"It was lying with some other objects. It must have been carried out to the sea from Burma or Thailand," says T Sathiamurthy.
The Buddha has been handed over to the local authorities, and may sound find a place in an Indian museum.
"We will protect it if nobody claims it," says Mr Sathiamurthy.
unfortunatly our "fair and objective" media wouldnt say anything about a genocide of 500,000 christians either. I have been doing my best to follow the violence in India, however the american press all but refuses to print any information.
Genocide of 500,000 Christians ,where exactly??
i said the media wouldnt say anything about it, i didnt say it actually happened to christians.
"unfortunatly our "fair and objective" media wouldnt say anything about a genocide of 500,000 christians either. I have been doing my best to follow the violence in India, however the american press all but refuses to print any information."
WHAT??!!! Genocide of 500,000 christians???!!! You sure you are talking about India???!!!
Please tell where and when did that happen. I live in India and how is it that I dont know about it. I would be very surprised if your american press reports nothing about it (if such a thing actually actually happens). Even incidents like, a few people pelting stones on a Church in Assam is instantly reported by the western and Indian press and you think a whole genocide of 500,000 people will go unreported. You must be nuts.
Well...sukhoi-30mki is an Indian Christian. He wants to know where exactly the genocide took place.
Since the Indian government has refused tsunami aid on the basis that they can handle everything themselves your comment seems to be misinformed. You may be thinking of the Indonesians.
"My only regret is that India didn't get Kashmir before her neighbor became nuclear armed!"
We could not have done that. Both China and America were on there side. In fact they still are. Pakistani lobby group in the US is just too strong. Had we tried to attack and take back the remaining part of Kashmir... America,China and the entire Muslim world would have entered the war against India. Except for Russia (and now Isreal) we dont have many allies in this part of the world where you mostly have Islamic regime or commie dictatorships. Even in 1971 when India and America were on the brink of war so long as the war was restricted on the eastern front it was ok, had we opened up a front in the west the US would have declared war on India. Is only after 9/11 that America realised the threat posed by Islamic fascism and is atleast ready to look at us as friends if not as allies.
But you neednt regret. There nukes are not goning to protect them from internal disintegration. Whether or not the CIA report is correct, the fact is Pakistan becomming a failed state by 2015 is inevitable. They can pull a dozen Kashmir on us and India will still last a hunders years. We pull another Bangladesh on them and they wont last for another decade. We had done it before once we can do it again. We neednt fight a war with them just give them a subtle push and they will commit suicide.
For start you can read a little bit about the Pakistani province of Balochistan.

India is just waiting for the US army to leave Pakistan. After that it will give the final push.
Sorry bout that. I was thinking of the Indonesians.
"As for Indonesia, which is a Muslim country, may those ungrateful b@stards rot on their islands.
Amen to that.."
To that comment, I would just like to say, that that really is not all that true. There are numerous stories of Muslim's welcoming CHRISTIAN help. Interesting...one of the Muslim's deepest opposers. One story, of small town, crushed and destroyed by the waves. A Christian team of missionaries came to the town to help rebuild, bring supplies, and they brought some equipment and filters for the water, which was undrinkable before, and now quite healthy to drink. Some Muslim officers came up and thanked them, telling them they appreciated the help, even from them, Christians. It is funny how all or most Muslim's are accused after the 911 attack especially. Even though they do not see eye-to-eye on American culture or even Christian doctrine, not all Muslim's are ungrateful to the American's or Christian's for their help. And many of them are horrified at being blamed for the terrible terrorist attacks. It was a terrorist attack, not a Mulsin attack.
All muslimes celebrated -- you don't remember the dancing on the streets i Pakistan, Palestine, etc.??? It was a muslime attack. Islamshould be eradicated like the disease it is -- a disease spread by a paedophile -- Mohound aka Mohammmed
No, not ALL muslim's celebrated. I happen to know quite a few, and many, MANY were very upset at the fact that American's would put the blame on Muslims. Yes, many Muslims do not care for our culture (extreme dislike, even hate), and perhaps were not unhappy about the events, but that is not ALL muslims. There are plenty of Muslims/Islams suffering in the United States, being blamed and criticized for something they did not do. It was terrorists who did it. The terrorists are Muslims, and have brainwashed many of their kind. But the Muslims are not all out to kill and destroy. Islam is not all about hate and murder. Apparently, all you look at is the evil Islamic/Muslim people, who go with what the terrorists say. The terrorists do NOT represent the entire Muslim religion. Perhaps you forget the dancing in the streets, the day they captured Suddam Hussein (with American help)? What all countries danced? Iraq (and maybe Pakistan and Palestine) a sworn enemy of the United States. But not all Muslim countries danced after 911, in fact, some offered their condolences. Being a Christian and American citizen (and someone who lost a loved one in the attack) I do not put the blame on the Muslim's as a whole, but the muslim terrorists. They think they are fighting a jihad, when in reality, many Muslim's do not agree. They are just terrorists, out to kill American life, only because of their hate.
Ok, the majority celebrated, the rest kept quiet as they were in infidel lands...
I happen to know quite a few, and many, MANY were very upset at the fact that American's would put the blame on Muslims.
Really? Now why DID America do that? Wait -- because the attacks were conducted in the name of Islam and also supported by the Slammic world -- not one voice of protest, not ONE fatwa declared against OBL for killing so many innocents -- do you know of even one fatwa that was launched??
Yes, many Muslims do not care for our culture (extreme dislike, even hate), and perhaps were not unhappy about the events, but that is not ALL muslims.
80% + sure makes a big majority -- that's the number of Pakis who support AlQ over the US
There are plenty of Muslims/Islams suffering in the United States, being blamed and criticized for something they did not do.
Really? They celebrated, they want America to submit, they want the world to submit to their death-cult, the cult created by a paedophile
It was terrorists who did it. The terrorists are Muslims, and have brainwashed many of their kind. But the Muslims are not all out to kill and destroy.
Yes they are -- read your Koran, it tells you what to do -- to kill all infidels.
Islam is not all about hate and murder.
Yes it is -- read your Koran, it tells you what to do -- to kill all infidels.
Apparently, all you look at is the evil Islamic/Muslim people, who go with what the terrorists say.
Du-uh, that makes for all the believers in the cult -- they are all brainwashed -- once they convert (to Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, whatever, I don't care), then one can trust them, otherwise, it's like trusting Nazis.
The terrorists do NOT represent the entire Muslim religion.
They do -- OBL says so himself as do the clerics in SAudi A, in Pakistan, in Indonesia, in Nigeria, in Sudan etc.
Perhaps you forget the dancing in the streets, the day they captured Suddam Hussein (with American help)?
Really? Saddam was secular and your jihadi buddies hated him almost as much as they hate the US.
What all countries danced? Iraq (and maybe Pakistan and Palestine) a sworn enemy of the United States.
Every Muslime country had these celebrations
But not all Muslim countries danced after 911, in fact, some offered their condolences.
Condolences, like the Saudi ones? After the saudis had funded the entire thing? And those condolences are worthless, they were just to ensure that the wounded tiger that was America on 10/11 didn't swat the slamic flies
Being a Christian and American citizen (and someone who lost a loved one in the attack) I do not put the blame on the Muslim's as a whole, but the muslim terrorists.
I put the blame on the cult of Islam -- eradicate that and the problem is solved.
They think they are fighting a jihad, when in reality, many Muslim's do not agree. They are just terrorists, out to kill American life, only because of their hate.
Nope, read your Koran.
