What's That Smell? Jacksonville
Wash Post ^ | 1-26-05 | Tony Kornheiser

Posted on 01/26/2005 4:42:47 AM PST by OXENinFLA

Right after Chad Lewis caught that touchdown pass with about four minutes to go, the touchdown that cemented the victory and ensured the Philadelphia Eagles would be in the Super Bowl, some guy in the stands joyfully held up a sign that said, "We're Going To Jacksonville."

And I thought: What on earth is second prize? You have to build there?

How did Jacksonville get the Super Bowl? What, Tuscaloosa was booked?

If going to Jacksonville for a week is the reward New England and Philadelphia get for being the best teams in the NFL this year, Peyton Manning ought to be happy he didn't get there. Imagine how Manning would have felt, having to play all year in Indianapolis, and then landing in Jacksonville? Which gods would he have offended to get that killer quinella?

The NFL must see itself as handing out some sort of charity when it awards the Super Bowl to any place other than New Orleans, Miami and Southern California. Because, believe me, nobody wants the game to be anywhere but there. So when the NFL insists on putting it in outposts like Detroit, Houston or Minneapolis, people ask, "Are you guys nuts?" But when you pick Jacksonville, people are agape and say, "Who in Jacksonville has a photo of Tagliabue with a goat?"

Kornheiser the Kornball.

Hey Tony, get a razor or a toupee, but do something about that sick looking comb-over!

I'll be looking to greet you next week with a size 10 wide, (it ought to fit your @$$ perfectly)!

If you ask me, DC still smells pretty bad right now. The scum running the place (bureaucrats) stink it up pretty good.

Of course, the Bush administration has keep the stench down to a tolerable level.

Bush must get tired of trying to sweep out the barns every day of the rot that infected it.

DC will be a wonderful place the day they can turn about 75% of the federal building into hotels.

The seafood in Jax is outstanding. Try some gator tail the next time you're there...

I know a little old lady in Lousiana that would bop you over the head with her spoon for including gator tail in a sentence about seafood.

She made it very, very clear to me and friends one evening, that her oyster po'boy was not, would never be, anything other than seafood and the gator tail was just a damn lizard.

But it was still the best gator tail I ever eat.

Anywhere.

(Po'boy was good, too.)

Tony Kornheiser is just one of the many reasons I do not subscribe to, or purchase at newstands, the Washington Post.

"I mean, really, does he think life ends at the edge of Manhatten? That 100,000 people in the US (other than him) would not care about what CITY the Superbowl is in, but rather, WHO is playing init and what goes on around the event?"

Since Tony lives in D.C., he probably thinks that life ends at the border of Georgetown -- and perhaps Capitol Hill. THose are where all the really neat parties (you know, where "everyone who's anyone goes) are held.

And, no, Tony cannot possibly imagine that people would go to something like the Superbowl to see good players compete.

You see, Tony -- like most in the "journalism" profession -- is not concerned with accurate reporting of events like the Superbowl. To him, the Superbowl is not so much a major sports event as it is an opportunity to get together with some of his like-minded "journalist" buddies and party, party, party. (This is true not just of sports writers, but also of people who cover national nominating conventions, major disasters, and any other major news event.)

So, for Tony and his fellow "journalists", the city where an event is held ias of utmost importance. They like places like Miami, Los Angeles, and New Orleans -- great party towns all.

But Jacksonville? or Omaha? or Indianapolis? How can a serious party dude find any action there??

I remember eating there frequently when I was a kid. Good to hear that it is still there.

"Another is downtown Omaha - due to the stockyards."

Hey. I really resent that!

I am not sure when you were last in Omaha, but you might want to know that Downtown Omaha (location of the corporate HQ of ConAgra) does not smell.

The Stockyards (what's left of them) are in South Omaha, and they are fast disappearing.

I grew up in Omaha, live in DC now, and enjoy every trip I make to my home town.

Jacksonville is a lovely town. I thought he must be a liberal, but reading this thread I see he might be just kidding.

Kornheiser probably comes from one of those small towns where they have a brothel and sheep sheering business in the same building.

Next Year the Super Bowl will be held in balmy climate of Detroit. Indoors of course but I dare say there won't be too many bikini parties along the Detroit river next year.

Screw you farthead!!! Athough, as I said before...when I picked up my Superbowl tickets last week, the security was nonexistent. This after they spent a year on security!

"Ya think this guy hasn't gotten around much?"

No, I don't. Take my word for it. There are many people in this part of the country(I'll include DC because it is DC and the guy is MSM)who don't know the rest of the country exists. If they get outside of the northeast, they literally are lost. They don't know the geography of the country, and they couldn't care less about the rest of the country. This criticism is particularly apropos to the elite, or at least to those who consider themselves to be elite.

You should visit Omaha again -- perhaps this Spring or Summer.

Downtown has changed considerably in just the past two or three years.

And, of course, the people of Omaha are truly some of the friendliest, nicest (and conservative) people around.

Jacksonville is a great place. Been there several times. My neighbors brother lives in Middleburg. Thinking about driving down on SB Saturday, hanging out for a day and leaving Monday.

Whitey's Fish Camp, right on the St John's on Rt 21 (or 221 can't remember) is another great place to go. Plus you may even see Artimus Pyle's (ex-Skynrd drummer) band play there
