MAPES IS NOT A SCAPEGOAT. She is a radical leftist who was in a position she could weld her journalistic power to bring down Bush. I agree, Rather is getting off way to light, with just retirement, He knew what was going on, but we should celebrate Mape's being fired. This is a very bad press-day for CBS, and the end of Dan Rather as a news Mogul. This is a good day.

"His 'retirement' allows him to leave with dignity, though he deserves no such break."He is being allowed to retire as the anchorman for the evening news.
However, he is being allowed to maintain his reporting position on 60 Minutes II, which is where the "exposé" was shown.
That's a slap in the face to every American, don't you think?

Don't forget the (very expensive) IBM Selectric typewriters which produced a document very much like the suspect memos, but still had (I think) a hard time doing superscripts.

Firing Rather would make cBS culpable and lie'able which of course they are. What needs to happen is pressure put on the FCC for allowing them to investigate THEMSELVES.. After ALL the FCC has a 300 million dollar budget this year(2004) probably more next year.. What happens to THAT money.?. Down a rat hole WHAT.?.. Bush pal'ing around with Clinton has an omnious odor about it.. Closeing the borders and putting some fire in the kettle at the FCC could put a hurting on the bad guys.. That probably WON'T happen.. Clinton would have none of that.. Clinton (bof of them) and Carter would have a fit..
Being a, "Unite'er and not a divider".. is starting to smell like TREASON.. from my computer desk.. At least it smells like RINO.. nothing worse than the defacation of a RINO... it smells like cowardice..

Asked to resign were Senior Vice President Betsy West, who supervised CBS News primetime programs; 60 Minutes Wednesday Executive Producer Josh Howard; Howard’s deputy, Senior Broadcast Producer Mary Murphy. The producer of the piece, Mary Mapes, was terminated. They fired Dan's subordinate and Dan's supervisors, but not Dan himself. I conclude Dan is a hopeless idiot who has nothing to do with the news and can't be held accountable for this smelly episode.

Then juxtapose the LACK of scrutiny on Kerry's records and those he refused to release..While I was at CBS's site waiting for them to post the full report, I decided to visit the tab titled: "The War Years - a Timeline of Bush and Kerry's Military Service". It's still on the CBS site.
Under Kerry's timeline, they say this about his 3rd purple heart:
After his third Purple Heart, the Navy is required to reassign Kerry out of Vietnam.
Note the passive tense...NOT that Kerry had to REQUEST the reassignment. CBS makes it sound like the reassignment was legally mandated.
The beat goes on......
