A HIGH IQ is a hindrance for women wanting to get married, while it is an asset for men, according to a study by four British universities.
The study found the likelihood of marriage increased by 35 per cent for males for each 16-point increase in IQ.
But for females, there was a 40 per cent drop for each 16-point rise.
The findings, by the universities of Aberdeen, Bristol, Edinburgh and Glasgow, were published in Britain's Sunday Times newspaper.
The study was based on the IQs of 900 males and females between their 10th and 40th birthdays.
Paul Brown, a psychologist and professor at Nottingham University, told the Sunday Times: "Women in their late 30s who have gone for careers after the first flush of university and who are among the brightest of their generation are finding that men are just not interesting enough."
Writer and broadcaster Claire Rayner said intelligent men often prefered a less brainy partner.
"A chap with a high IQ is going to get a demanding job that is going to take up a lot of his energy and time.
"In many ways he wants a woman who is an old-fashioned wife and looks after the home, a copy of his mum in a way."
"OK, are you talking about a tall, gorgeous, nut case that lives in So. Cali?
Makes fun of the handicap?
Name of Barbara?"
Nope. This one is only 5' 4". As far as Barbara, haven't run into her - yet - but given my track record with the 'fairer sex'....it might just be a matter of tome #:=0
"All women have a psychotic side.
Wise men learn how to control it."
Truly Wise Men (like the Apostle Paul) swear off the creatures alltogether and live lives of monkhood. Sounds perfect about now.
Bingo.
It's the gap between their expectations and the reality posed by their attitudes to their mates that keeps them from marriage.
Additionally, many have intellectualized and provided self-evidencing arguments for the destruction and banishment to hell of all men. Overcoming that initial hurdle for many is too imposing for anyone that values how a finite lifespan is spent. You could chip away at a Janeane Garofolo, and after 40 years get her to admit that conservatism has it's merits, but why would you want to work so hard for so little?
Hmmm. I suppose that's possible. I wouldn't really know, since I got married at 23, while I was in the service. :)
But I wouldn't be the least bit surprised.
looks like I missed a lot of fun after I left the thread.
Really?
How 'bout, "There's no such thing as wasted knowledge"? :-)
Since you both select and evaluate the suitors with your proprietary methods, who am I to argue with your diagnosis ?
My Ph.D. in chemistry was a waste. Everything I do is based on work experience, not what I did in grad school. Grad school was 8 years down the toilet, 8 years of income and investment missed, and worst of all, it kept me "off the market" romantically during the prime marriage years (girls would rather marry actual income, not 'potential'). I didn't get married til much, much later in life than I had hoped (i got a great wife though -- whew!) and grad school has got to be a big part of the reason.

Yeah, it's somewhat subjective.
Wish I'd seen this sooner.
Crap. I'll never get married!
I think student loans have a lot to do with that. Many "brainy" women who pursue advanced degrees end up saddled with a lot of student loans, which can preclude stay at home motherhood. What struck me from the article was the idea that a "smart" woman would not want to be at home. Newsflash: female intellect and being at home with your children aren't mutually exclusive.
PS.
Spears has made over 100 million doing those kind of moves.
NOW THAT IS SMART!
lol
LOL! What she meant, but didn't dare tell you, was "I wish I could find a guy like you that I was actually attracted to."
Men see friendship with a woman as a stepping stone to romance. Women see friendship with a man as the place they go once they've determined romance with him is not possible - it's "safe" then to be friends. This fundamental misunderstanding leads men to waste a lot of their lives hoping for things that aren't ever going to happen. If you can't attract her almost immediately, you never will. ;)
That would be pretty funny...
OBITUARY: John Smith, 72, went to his rest at the Shady Acres Tribal Casino and Retirement Home on December 31st, 2004. He is survived by a Weber gas grill, a 30" LCD TV, a complete set of Buffy the Vampire Slayer DVD's, a 1994 Ford Escort, and a 401K worth $87,453. Services will be private to avoid a public brawl over the terms of Smith's will. ;)
Well, it's no big deal any more. Years ago, I came to a new philosophy of life: "I hate people in general, and women in particular!" No more relationship problems!
Mark
It sounds funny because ultimately -- despite all the hoopla -- that's not how we judge people.
