Brainy girls have marriage handicap
the Australian ^ | January 03, 2005 | "correspondents in London"

A HIGH IQ is a hindrance for women wanting to get married, while it is an asset for men, according to a study by four British universities.

The study found the likelihood of marriage increased by 35 per cent for males for each 16-point increase in IQ.

But for females, there was a 40 per cent drop for each 16-point rise.

The findings, by the universities of Aberdeen, Bristol, Edinburgh and Glasgow, were published in Britain's Sunday Times newspaper.

The study was based on the IQs of 900 males and females between their 10th and 40th birthdays.

Paul Brown, a psychologist and professor at Nottingham University, told the Sunday Times: "Women in their late 30s who have gone for careers after the first flush of university and who are among the brightest of their generation are finding that men are just not interesting enough."

Writer and broadcaster Claire Rayner said intelligent men often prefered a less brainy partner.

"A chap with a high IQ is going to get a demanding job that is going to take up a lot of his energy and time.

"In many ways he wants a woman who is an old-fashioned wife and looks after the home, a copy of his mum in a way."

An extreme version of the degree to which the "intelligent" feminumbskulls turn guys off can be found on this website

NoMarriage.com

I think that the guy that made that site is kind of a whiney punk and way too quick on the trigger with his generalizations. But... he kind of personifies an attitude a lot of guys I know have toward marriage. "Why risk it?"

Hot tip: lots of guys think that site is funny as hell. The women in your life will not agree. Don't ask me how I came to this painful understanding.

Is a college degree a path to being a rounded individual by learning about stuff beyond a mere vocation. (literature, math, history, polictics, sciences) or is it just a ticket to enter a job. (lawyer, social worker, government job)?

Do men want women for whom inteligence is a means to punch a clock or do men want a woman for whom inteligence is a means to live a life? I choose the woman who wants to live a life.

Wow. Made it all the way to post #8 before abortion was brought up.

Must be a new record. Usually it is post #2.

This study is British, it appears.

As an American, I hope that the Brits have it backwards and brainy American women are the preferred catch.

Hi, Ginifer! Happy New Year!

Tell me, where do you find those men who are not intimidated by a smart woman, and actually love
intellectual conversations? I know some very intelligent men, but they keep the conversations very light and absolutely clam up at any other kind.

No kidding. I think most guys (British or American) would prefer someone whose IQ is larger than their shoe size, lol.

Intelligence seems to make women career oriented and strongly motivated to work outside the home while kids are young. Both of those attributes detract from being an effective, stay-at-home, dedicated mother.

You are wrong there. At least to a certain degree. I am not Einstein but I am certainly far from unintelligent and I chose to stay at home. It is a matter of values, not intelligence level. I have been at home now for 10 years. Are there times now where I want to scream? You damn well better believe it. I find my outlets here and in books. Someday I will do more. For now, I do more than I ever will then.

Then again, I'm not a hairy legged harpy.

Soda-spraying LOL on that one. That is one thing (two things) that will put a woman on the fast track to living alone with two cats: poor personal hygiene and nagging.

Our systems are uneven, if not outright unfair. I think a woman is much more inhibited in her possibility of marriage if she's unpleasant looking, than she is by being extremely bright. There's a lot of bright people of both sexes, but men seem to generally tilt towards beauty in females, and women seem to generally tilt towards power in males.

I suspect the article or the underlying research may involve some sour grapes! In any event no statistical measure would be valid unless it corrected for the other variables.

I know a fellow who likes them docile, too. His solution, being a liberal, is to "rescue" them and install them in his household sans marriage. He cruises and finds the ones abused by fathers and boyfriends who are desperate for a refuge.

He's well-to-do, a "creative class" member, and fancies himself quite the hero.

His latest comes with a teen-aged daughter of her own, whose boarding-school (kids are so underfoot) tuition he pays.

Any time he likes, he can send her back to the pound, and her daughter, too. Result--docility. Perfect docility. She'll dress up in anything he asks, and plays any part he wants her to play.

Interesting, eh?

I either always dated women smarter than me

or all women ever born were smarter than me.

Dude, the first thing you have to learn is that just because every woman tells you you are an idiot (and they all will) doesn't mean that it is true. Now pardon me while I duck and weave my way off of this thread... *grin*

I've never been to college, but I would assume that the experiece should be part of making someone a bit more well rounded. There are, of course, those who see a college degree as simply a ticket to a better (or more extravagant) life, but honestly, I don't see anything wrong with that in principle.

It's better to be working and earning a living rather than accepting handouts as a way of life.

Good luck with finding your Greek-speaking Ms. Right! :)

it may be a matter of a comfort zone. I know there are certain social events where firm politics and topics are not properly spoken as a "time and place" manner.

In the day and age of political correctness, a simple comment can come back to haunt you. (ie a lawyer who says they support the federal marriage amendment many find their aspirations blocked by a liberal in the firm or government job.)

It may have very little to do with an intellectual conversation, rather a social etiquette thing.

Yep a lot of people say that. Plus today a woman can't wait for a man to ask her to marry. A woman has to support herself, etc. Not that one should plan for the worst, but if a man leaves her, she better have a skill.
