Brainy girls have marriage handicap
the Australian ^ | January 03, 2005 | "correspondents in London"

A HIGH IQ is a hindrance for women wanting to get married, while it is an asset for men, according to a study by four British universities.

The study found the likelihood of marriage increased by 35 per cent for males for each 16-point increase in IQ.

But for females, there was a 40 per cent drop for each 16-point rise.

The findings, by the universities of Aberdeen, Bristol, Edinburgh and Glasgow, were published in Britain's Sunday Times newspaper.

The study was based on the IQs of 900 males and females between their 10th and 40th birthdays.

Paul Brown, a psychologist and professor at Nottingham University, told the Sunday Times: "Women in their late 30s who have gone for careers after the first flush of university and who are among the brightest of their generation are finding that men are just not interesting enough."

Writer and broadcaster Claire Rayner said intelligent men often prefered a less brainy partner.

"A chap with a high IQ is going to get a demanding job that is going to take up a lot of his energy and time.

"In many ways he wants a woman who is an old-fashioned wife and looks after the home, a copy of his mum in a way."

";Feminism is a nasty conundrum, isn't it?'

It has destroyed much of the female population, completely ruining their lives."

Their lives? THEIR LIVES???!??!?!?!?!?!??!

What about the lives of their VICTIMS??????????????????

I've read most of the thread and have seen a lot of comments that I'd say decidedly place the blame on women. However, in real life, I've known many, many, many men who say they'd be uncomfortable with a woman who made more money.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again, "Intelligence is over rated!"

Uh? Does mean you think stupidity is undervalued?

A) People who are genuinely smart/intelligent etc. don't buy into that status and toy-filled lifestyle.

B) I've seen rich people and poor people and there is one stunning difference between the two: the rich have a time horizon that is much more distant. The vast majority of rich folks I've known are willing to spend time to achieve a goal or acquire an item of value. The poor tend to want stuff immediately.

C)Few lifestyles are static, you are either on your way up or your way down by increments. Take that for whatever it's worth (probably not much).

D)To promote an attitude that education just makes you unsatisfied with your lot in life and isn't "real," is highly irresponsible at a time when the vast majority of well-paying jobs will require some highly specialized skill set. The days of getting an office job with just a high school degree are quickly fading.

I assume you mean the men who they ruin, and/or the babies they abort. You are certainly correct, whichever.

Lemme give ya a hint, since you appear to be clueless about this situation: A wealthy successful woman tends to be a hellish controlling harpy when it comes to her hubby; he takes second place to her $$$$, and if he makes even one red cent less than she does, then he is a 'failure' and she has wasted her years with him. And she keeps telling him that again and again and again (when she is not losing it and beating him with a skillet or whatever else is handy, knowing that even a half-hearted attempt at self-defense will land HIM in cuffs).

Read my tag line. Then think about it. Then read it again.

I was a soldier. I saw landmines up close and personal and saw what they did to the foolish men who tried messing with them.

Believe me, I know what I am talking about.

I agree with what you just wrote. As to D), degree-snobism is a waste of energy and young people should be counseled to avoid it, while building solid job skills.

I don't know your situation. You might have been blinded by looks (it happens). Maybe you just test well at the college level (it's common). Maybe your wife developed biopolar disorder and began hosing you down with tartar sauce in the middle of the night from a super soaker while singing show tunes (this has probably never happened, but is possible, at least in theory).

I think you are correct in your assessment of the article. It's somewhat galling to realize that some people would assume that I am stupid because 1) I stay home with my children and/or 2) because I don't have a degree.

You have no earthly idea. Try being a man who stays home with children. People will treat as though you're not only stupid, but absolutely broken.

Look, all the toys are just that, toys. The real stuff resides in the work and family. I have never read an obituary that listed a person's "stuff" over his family or accomplishments.

As a soldier, I was married to a woman that had no skills. After our divorce, I found the smartest woman I have ever known.

For the next 10 years, my second wife earned almost twice what I did. For the first time in my life, I had found a woman that I respected, both as a wife, and professionaly.

Eventually, I was able to earn twice what she is paid, but we always had a mutual respect for each other.

20 years later.....

So you found a smart woman who didn't have a psychotic side, eh? Go ahead. RUB IT IN.

I found the smartest woman I have ever known. To this day, she still astounds me.

Five years ago, she was in a horrible auto-accident and was no longer able to perform in her profession. Today, she earnes only a little above minimum-wage.

This never mattered to us, since we are a single unit. Many times in our marriage, she was the only one with an income.

Someday, I will no longer be able to work, and she will once again earn the majority of our income.

That is what mutual respect and support is all about!

LOL. The problem is that the really smart ones are fully capable of hiding their inner madness.

All women have a psychotic side.

Wise men learn how to control it.
