If anyone's interested, NavyChief is a great American Hero, and will go down in history as a man who was instrumental in saving his country from being duped into voting for a communist sympathiser.

Semper Fi, NavyChief!

There is no such discharge that I know of that is SPECIFICALLY other than honorable. It is just a generic way of saying he did NOT receive an HONORABLE DISCHARGE.

So he received a General/Undesireable/Bad Conduct or a Dishonorable discharge, ONE OF THESE FOUR. Unless things changed in the past 20 years or so since I retired.

Thomas Lipscombe mentioned in his original NY Sun article about this that the Secretary of the Navy that would have given that discharge is John Warner - now a Republican Senator from Virginia.

Sen. Warner's official Senate website verifies that he was appointed Under-Secretary of the Navy in 1969 and was promoted to Secretary of the Navy and left the service and that position in 1974.

So, if we're talking about the Secretary of the Navy that would have been involved in this less than honorable discharge, it will have to be Senator Warner. However, when Lipscombe asked him to comment he said he had no recollection about Kerry. Maybe he's come around.

There is a recent (relatively, as in less than two decades ago) document that asserts an honorable discharge for Ol' Feckless John ... but the original discharge documents are yet to surface.

"Personally, Kerry will simply say, that I was given a less than honorable discharge because I was protesting the war. "

WHY and HOW he was not given an honorable discharge is almost immaterial. The point will be made is that he purposely obfuscated, lied, and withheld information in the course of the campaign. That revelation is going to swing a percentage of voters.

So sir.

I was just an itch in my dad's pants back then. I have no question in my mind that Kerry is a liar and that there is a reason his records have been kept private. The only reason for my post is that every other day around here something pops up (not just Swift Vets) about "the thing" that will finally knock Kerry out.

I still don't think that Kerry has a prayer. I felt strongly enough about Kerry's misrepresentation of his time in Vietnam that I gave money to the Swiftees.

HAVE YOU EVER KNOWN A CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT WHO REFUSED TO BE INTERVIEWED BY SERIOUS JOUNRALISTS?

Not before now, but I'm sure Hillary is taking lessons for '08.

Not "dishonorable." It's "Other than Honorable." Big difference. Not that it should matter, but that may be one of their talking points if this pans out.

Yes. Huge difference. (1) A DD can only be granted after a criminal conviction (i.e., General Court-Martial); (2) a discharge under other than honorable conditions (a.k.a. UOTHC, UO, or OTH) is granted in an administrative discharge proceeding; and (3) even in the wake of a conviction by court-martial, an officer cannot get a DD, only a "dismissal."

If in fact this turns out to be true (and I will believe it when I see it), we need to make sure we have our facts straight. Let sloppiness be the hallmark of CBS, not Freep.

I far as I can tell that would be John H. Chafee, who died in 1999. Or it means that John William Warner, SECNAV 1972-74, who also happens to be a Republican Senator from Virginia and chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

This has the making of a real story. Maybe having a traitor as POTUS was enough for Warner to come out with this despite legal fallout.

This is Chief himself saying he has it.

And he could be lying, or stretching the truth, or whatever. (NOT that I think he is....)

Chief's word is not enough. It's a rumor until he provides unambiguous proof.
