Desperate men often resort to clichéd lines when trying to snare women. Senator John Kerry must be desperate, because he dragged out the tired, misleading statistic about the so-called wage gap during last night's debate; namely, that women only earn 76 cents for each man's dollar.
This factoid comes from Department of Labor data on the average wage of a full-time working woman and the average wage of a full-time working man. And, yes, if you look at those numbers you will find that the average woman earns about three quarters of the income of the average man.
But that statistic ignores many relevant factors that affect a worker's take-home pay. For starters, it doesn't adjust for number of years worked. On average, women spend about a decade out of the workforce to care for their families. It should come as no surprise to Senator Kerry that a 35-year-old woman reentering the workforce after ten years off earns less than a man or woman who worked continuously during that time.
The wage-gap statistic also fails to consider educational attainment. Today, women earn more than half of all bachelor's and master's degrees, but it wasn't always that way. Older women in the workforce tend to have less education than their male peers, which affected their career path, their salaries, and ultimately Department of Labor data.
Women and men also often have different priorities when assessing employment opportunities. One survey of working women found that for nearly three quarters a flexible schedule was "very important" when considering a job. This means that many women are willing to trade more money for more flexibility or time off.

How did a post about Kerry's bad pick-up lines get a bunch of US farting in church???
Hey, boss, I'm feeling like hating on you, so give me a raise or I start pouring the Haterade. ;)
Well, yeah.
But you can't expect us to think about what's fair--what's JUST--when something as important as a claim BITM pulled out of her rectal crevice is as stake, can you?
Logic problem: Ad hominem, red herring.
Younger men are helping out more. Older men are like the guys on this thread.
Logic problem: red herring
More women, by choice, are chosing not to marry. Especially when the choice is to be married to some on this thread or earning a good living.
Logic problem: red herring, false dilemma
The "mad at men" theory is as old as you must be. It's used by so many who know so little.

You got legs, baby! Youre everywhere! Youre all over the place!
Gotta love a woman who dresses in stainless steel.
The Evil Midnight Bomber What Bombs At Midnight was my first choice for an FR screen name, but it was too long (probably subtle and nuanced too) and I was deeply saddened.
Our town is one of those town that has grown markedly during the last 20 years.
Twenty years ago, (which is before I ever got here) that female tech (let's call her Sally) was the ONLY X-ray tech in the Hospital. As time went by, the town's population grew and the Hospital got more and more techs, both male and female. That female tech then became the Department Manager. In other words, she was The Boss. She remained The Boss for 15 years.
The years passed and Sally decided to step down as Manager to become a "regular tech" and reduce her life stress. The next Manager was a female and so was the Manager after that who is the current Manager.
Amongst the X-ray techs, Sally now makes more money than any other tech, including the 6 male techs we now have, although Sally "does the same job" for the simple fact that Sally has more seniority than anybody else and seniority translates into a higher hourly wage.
For a few years, we only had one male tech and that particular male tech sometimes had a feeling that things were stacked against him in the "office politics" department However, his wage was based on job description and seniority as was the salary of every other tech.

Where you drink down the shooters and unwrap the hooters
Where egg nog's a plenty and the girls are all 20

Sorry for butting in -- but you haven't brought any statistics to the discussion to support your position.
All you have brought forth is one single case of "anecdotal evidence", your own.
Why don't all of these "under-paid" women leave those male dominated companies, start their own "all women" companies, and beat the pants of those male dominated companies? You all can start "all women" banks, "all women" insurance companies, "all women" factories, "all women" farms, etc. etc.
When you capture all of the market share, and put all the male dominated companies out of business, you can then hire all those out-of-work men and pay them measly little salaries. Ahhh, the sweet taste of revenge.
I think it's a grand plan and you should jump right on it.
Spoon!
"However, his wage was based on job description and seniority as was the salary of every other tech."
Yes, but he was also a man. So he had a chance to move up in the male-dominated-coot hierarchy, instead of being ground down by the sexist-patriarchal-old-geezer-strip-club-goin' boardroom boys.
/channelling BITM
And so he says, "I don't like the cut of your jib," and I go, I says, "It's the only jib I got, baby!"
Never!!!!
Yeah, well, don't count your weasels before they pop, dink!
