This is hugh.

Oh good... let's make our taxation much, much more difficult for us to manage.

"States that have an income tax have been deducting these from Federal returns for ages. This move actually levels the field for States that have had no such deduction."

I lived in Calif for 18 years and remember taking sales tax on our Federal Income Tax return. I was completely floored to learn that we couldn't take them when we moved to Washington State. I couldn't understand how it could be alright to claim them on a FEDERAL TAX FORM if living in one state and not if living in another state.

See who is in the top five? Yea NY. See the bottom five? Texas. Next question.

See my #79. I don't disagree.

I agree with you. I live in NYS. Our sales tax in our county is enormously high--8 and 1/4%

Well, NY has some redeeming qualities. Can't think of any right now, but I'm sure there are some :-) Seriously, though - if the rest of the state could get rid of NYC they'd be much better off. NYC is a giant tax-sucking pig of a city.

"Were you always entitles to at least the table tax - even if your sales tax paid was actually lower?"

Yes!

Everytime we go home we buy as many groceries as possible and we save a lot of money. In Tenn.we pay 9.75% on everything.

And are you supposed to report those purchases to pay Use Tax on them, like we have to do in PA? Note that there's no tax on clothing here, though. And how about Delaware... on their official "Welcome to Delaware" signs, even before you get the "First State to Ratify the Constitution," you get
"HOME OF TAX-FREE SHOPPING!"

Having recently moved out of Delaware, I find it so hard to believe Delaware is in the lowest tax burden category.

My income and property taxes are far lower in Virginia than they were in Delaware.

Granted, there is no "sales tax" at the register in Delaware, but anyone fooled by the idea there is no sales tax in Delaware is in dreamland. It is called a gross receipts tax and is imposed on every single business in the state from the smallest sole proprietorship service business to the largest manufacturer or chain store in the state.

At the very least, repeal the payroll deduction. The schlubbs will finally realize how high their taxes are when they have to write a check to the government every month.

Yes - the public schools are a disgrace and each party keeps bragging about what they have done for education -

Education is but one of the farces put out to the people -

On the no federal taxes - correct but the people were told it was needed - I mean the common talk was - how else would you get all these programs that protect and serve us -

And the government took it from there -

I'd really like to see how much of the American tax money goes to other nations - or to the IMF fund -

The years have taken a toll -

just my thoughts - take care now

Just reread that....

....States that do not have State income taxes will be deductible...

Alas, no relief for California residents.

I couldn't agree more. There are pockets of that here in Buffalo too. The city is a liberal bastion, the suburbs are more "conservative" as far as that goes in this neck of the woods. That is how Jack Quinn a repub. got elected to congress. He was a RINO, but hey he was in the Repub caucus and voted right most of the time. Still, not easy to elect a repub. here. Hell, one district in the city voted, and I'm not kidding here, 10,000 to 300 something for Hillary!! You get the idea.

My memory is hazy, it's been a long time since we did this. I think it was only for those who itemized. But you chose the greater of the two amounts, either the table or the actual.

Same thing with the gasoline tax.

But I repeat: My memory is hazy on the whole thing. Maybe it was for everybody, itemize or not. Anyone recall for sure????

I have no clue. I have never heard of a tax like that here in Tenn. Our Children live in Virgina and are in the Military. They keep Tennessee as their legal residence so that they do not have to pay state and other weird taxes that Virgina have. They do not have to pay anything to Tenn.

Not constitutional to make sales tax deductable in some states and not in others - per the Equal Protection clause.

That's not so. Taxpayers are treated unequally all across the tax code.

I have, but I'm an accounting nerd! Marsha Blackburn, a TN congresswoman has been working on this bill for about a year. And before that my ignorant state representatives kept saying most people's tax burden would go down if we instituted a state income tax. I was tracking so I could cry over how stupid they were if they succeeded in passing an income tax. I use Quicken, and it makes it fairly easy to allocate a portion of the items in your check and credit card registers to sales tax.
