Hispanics threaten California boycott over license bill veto

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Angered by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's veto this week of a bill to allow illegal immigrants to drive legally in California, Hispanic leaders and pro-immigrant groups are organizing protests and a national boycott of the state in their campaign to win the licenses.

Supporters of the bill, which was approved by the Democratic-controlled Legislature, said the Republican governor will pay a political price for reneging on promises to reach a compromise. They charge that Schwarzenegger belatedly added a demand that such licenses be specifically marked to differentiate them from licenses held by U.S. citizens and legal residents, a suggestion many said would encourage discrimination and persecution.

"If this is the posture the governor wants to take, then our community is going to be forced to kick it up a notch," said Nativo Lopez, president of the Mexican American Political Association and Hermandad Mexicana, based in Southern California.

Lopez, who led a one-day state boycott in December over the same issue, said he will organize a national boycott to drive convention business away from such popular destinations as San Diego, Los Angeles, Anaheim and San Francisco.

I'd better add this one -
Schwarzenegger says 'no' to claims for those sent to Mexico in 1930s Modesto Bee | 9-24-04

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Friday decided against allowing Americans who were illegally deported from California to Mexico during the Great Depression to sue to recover damages connected to the loss of their homes and businesses. The governor vetoed a bill that would have opened a two-year window for victims of the so-called Mexican Repatriation program to file damage claims. The statute of limitations for filing suits against the state and private organizations in California has long since closed.

It was one of two bills by state Sen. Joseph Dunn, D-Garden Grove, that addressed the repatriation, in which an estimated 500,000 to 2 million people, including many legal immigrants and children who were U.S. citizens, were rounded up and forced to move to Mexico to create jobs for white Americans between 1929 and 1944.

The deportations, authorized by President Hoover and carried out in cooperation with local authorities, targeted areas with large Hispanic populations, mostly in California, Texas and Michigan.

Schwarzenegger has not yet acted on the second bill, which would create a privately funded commission to study the deportations and help determine the number of survivors.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Semantics. American citizens aren't deported; those posing as citizens are (well, used to be). All around our planet countries are finding illegal immigrants to be such a dran that they're rounding them up and booting them out. Only America is villified for this common-sense measure to insure its survival. If everyone else is creating refugees at a time when we display weakness on this front, how can we prevent those countries from making us the primary dumping ground for their unwanted?

I was surprised to find a History Channel documentary about America's Marijuana Tax Act (spelled "marihuana" at that time) to be purported and relentlessly pushed by Southwestern states, specifically Arizona, as a way to expell Mexicans residing here illegally on the basis of their supposed involvement with this drug.

What has happened to Tennessee? I've lived there off and on for about 13 years up until 98 when I moved to the left coast.

I just can't imagine this garbage taking place there.

No wait-- they're already boycotting English.

This is pretty much true. I live in California, and it almost seems like English is a foreign language here. When I retire, I am outta here. Maybe you can understand why.

CA is so screwed. Our hospital emergency rooms are closing at a rapid rate and schools and social services are overwhelmed due to the illegals. The resources are drying up and what little tax base we have (tax payers) are sick and tired of the illegals taking over. Now the illegals want driver licenses. The Hispanic population want CA to be annexed back into Mexico. God help us.

Hispandering to illegals is BS. Hissy fits and panic from hyphenated citizens demanding their criminal behavior be ignored is too funny.

To show their outrage, why don't they just leave this country?

The outrage should be directed against those corrupt politicians who supported this bill.

I think all concerned LEGALS should demand ICE agents be out in force and visit with these characters to determine their "right" to boycott anything in the U.S.

President Eisenhower had it right. He sent 5,000 federal agents into the LA barrios, rounded up the border jumpers and put the illegal Mexicans on ships and took them so far down the coast to drop them off, they were almost in Guatemala. When word of that spread through their grapevine, two million of them VOLUNTARILY went home over the following three years.

If the government doesn't get tough with these people and throw them out, there is going to be widespread violence in American streets at some point.

These people are a indigent horde of locusts, stripping the country bare of its resources.

....I had to provide my birth certificate despite having my driver's license and military DD-214 on hand at initial hiring. Dual standards, real and inadvertant.

Get rid of all that worthless junk listed above. Buy some forged documents and learn to speak with a Spanish accent and you will be in like Flynn.

Since the standards the government sets is higher for you than it is for them, join 'em......

Surround the protesters, check for green cards, load them on a boat and head 700 miles south to a Mexican alnd fall.

Send a gun boat to protect the landing.

Uhm, are the illegals saying they won't be paying their hospital bills, income taxes and the like? Maybe they're threatening to protest by withholding their votes?

Guess must be just shaking in yer boots over this.
