'60 Minutes' Documents on Bush Might Be Fake

(CNSNews.com) - The 32-year-old documents produced Wednesday by the CBS News program "60 Minutes," shedding a negative light on President Bush's service in the Texas Air National Guard, may have been forged using a current word processing program, according to typography experts. Three independent typography experts told CNSNews.com they were suspicious of the documents from 1972 and 1973 because they were typed using a proportional font, not common at that time, and they used a superscript font feature found in today's Microsoft Word program. More to Come

So that's how the OM is going to spin it. Sixty-Maggots should divulge their source of the docs. Are they saying the WH gave released them? Probably mixing truth and fiction -- e.g. the WH gave them SOME docs, but not these, so they try to fool the reader into thinking these docs were included in what the WH released. This is the same game Kerry has been playing with his service records.

Pretty amazing that the margins are a perfect match for the Word default, and that the author of this memo hit their carriage return in the exact same places that Word automatically wraps text.

For me, this is the strongest argument.

I'll bet he had a secretary in a posh office and that explains the non-military terms, high end typewriter and signature.

I remember having a secretary type letters for me. There is absolutely no way any self respecting secretary in 1973 that would have typed those memo's as they were written. The grammar is beyond awful. Secretaries were trained to type memo's and letters with correct grammar and correct spelling. They were also taught to initial everything they typed.

no self respecting secretary would have typed that memo. They would have slit their wrists before preparing something that read like that.

Hi Peach.

I have worked in document imaging for 20 years. I have spent much time on zoomed in pixels trying to get OCR programs to work.

I have shown the LGF merged documents to my colleges there is universal agreement that it is utterly impossible for anything typed in 1973 to match a current word document.

Not without creep, registration errors, jumps in the spacing, No way. Absolutely no way.

In the mid-60's, I used an IBM Executive typewriter in high school for special projects for teachers. (I believe this is the correct spacing of letters, but it has been awhile). Each letter was assigned a "1/2" space. The letter "i" was 2 "1/2 spaces". The letter "m" was 4 "1/2 spaces" but a capital "M" was 5 "1/2 spaces". Most letters were 3 "1/2 spaces". It did not have a type ball but the regular old fashioned keys.

Most typewriters used either 10 (pica) or 12 (elite) pitch type (size of type).

The way to make subscript type on a Selectric typewriter was the manually "hold" the batten part way between lines and then type the letters you wanted subscripted. So, subscripting is and was possible on a Selectric typewriter.

The type ball eliminated the problem of "floating" capital letters - which happened after typing for a long time and the "cap" fingers got tired and didn't hold down the key strong enough and you got the "floating" capital letters.

Don't know if these documents are fake or real but I'm inclined to believe fake.

The Selectric doesn't do porportional spacing. There is a "Selectric-Composer" that does, but it is not likely to be used in a regular office.

Exactly. Squadron pogues didn't have anything fancy. The little orange-case Selectric with the 12 pitch elite ball was it.

Because of my background and knowledge of standard adminstrative formatting, abbreviation, and filing practices relating to official correspondence in the 70s I could have made perfect forgeries. These are not perfect by any means.

OK, I am just a neophyte, but couldn't we Freep Google News? I don't know if that's how Google News works, but does their search engine provide more stories on items that are searched for more often? What would happen if lots of people searched it for "60 minutes fake Bush documents"?

I've been following this debate since it started without commenting. I will admit at first I thought this all may have been wishful partisan thinking, but after seeing all this evidence I have changed my mind. Especially the post where the flashing symbols of the different documents on top of each other were not different... I don't see how this could have been typed by a 72 typerwriter and come out the exact same as MS works today. Great job all!

I don't think Rather and CBS lied about this. I think, because they are democrats, that they had a predisposition to think that these documents were real and that this bias in judgement contributed to the slip that let this get past them. They will be embarrased and probably blame 'staff' or an 'expert', but they should look at their own ideological biases at the root of the problem. Despite what they themselves think, they just don't view things equally on both sides.

When this backfires, it will cause more harm to Kerry and Co. then if they hadn't run anything. That's what is so great about all this and why we Conservatives shouldn't get upset when these tricks are played. Fahrenheit 9/11 will backfire, these forgeries will backfire, Kerry's flip flops and mistatments will backfire. We may wonder, "how can he/they get away with that"? Well, if we're thinking that, so is just about everyone else. Look for a 2004 Landslide....... now if these damn Republicans would just cut spending I'd be happy. :)

The "Executive" came out decades before the Selectric, and may well have been less expensive. The beuaty of the Selectric was that it made it impossible to crash two type bars by hitting two keys at the same time.

The likelihood of this being real is < 0.00000001

Brief Partial Summary of the Forgery Elements of the CBS (?Boston Globe) Faked letter
Made by FReepers
=================================================

1-- proportional spacing did not exist
2 -- superscripts did not exist
3 - "th" single element did not exist
4 - Smart quotes. Curved apostrophes and quotation marks were not available
5-The blurriness of the copy indicates it was recopied dozens of times, tactic of forgers
6--Signature block. Typical authentic military signature block has name, then rank, then on the next line the person's position. This just has rank beneath the name. 7--Margins. These look like a computer's unjustified default, not the way a person typing would have done it.
8 -- Date usually with three letters
9 - words run over consistent with word processor
10 - Times Roman font did not exist then (per Haas Atlas)
11 - signature looks faked
