~ MONDAY FAVORITES ~
This week: What is your favorite dessert?

In our continuing series about your favorites, we ask this week about food. We chose this topic for the most obvious of reasons--we all like eating. Instead of wasting time eating something nutritious, we skip to dessert. After all, that's the most important part of the meal. So? Post your favorite dessert and a picture on the thread. If you can't reach us via Freepmail, email us at canteenusa@canteenusa.com . By the way, you can put more than one favorite dessert. These things can be hard sometimes. We don't want to stress you.

Don't see your favorite dessert? Post it on the thread. Also, post the recipe if you'd like. (Click pictures for recipes! If you have a better recipe, please share it with everyone!)

Chocolate Chip Cookies

DID YOU KNOW?
Ruth Wakefield invented Chocolate Chip Cookies. Ruth Graves Wakefield graduated from the Framingham State Normal School Department of Household Arts in 1924. She worked as a dietitian and lectured on food, until, together with her husband she bought a tourist lodge named the Toll House Inn.

Ruth Wakefield prepared the recipes for the meals served to the guests at the Inn and gained local notoriety for her deserts. One of her favorite recipes was for Butter Drop Do cookies. The recipe called for the use of baker's chocolate and one day Ruth found herself without the needed ingredient. She substituted a semi-sweet chocolate bar cut up into bits. However, unlike the baker's chocolate the chopped up chocolate bar did not melt completely, the small pieces only softened.

As it so happened the chocolate bar had been a gift from Andrew Nestle of the Nestle Chocolate Company. As the Toll House chocolate chip cookie recipe became popular, sales of Nestle's semi-sweet chocolate bar increased. Andrew Nestle and Ruth Wakefield struck a deal. Nestle would print the Toll House Cookie recipe on its packaging and Ruth Wakefield would have a lifetime supply of Nestle chocolate. (Click here to find out more information.)

Hail Tonkin..
I believe you among several other very helpful souls responded to a thread way back in December about losing and mourning my dog. I was thinking about getting another.

Thanks to the suggestions made. I rescued 2 Lab puppies. I have had them since Christmas week and I am in love again.

They are 9 and 10 months old now and growing better behaved by the day. They have earned their keep doing watch dog duty last night with a little incident.

They have filled my home with enthusiasm and puppy love.

Just thought I'd let you know how things worked out.

Their favorite desert is anything that is in my hand..

As a rule, I don't go much by recipes, I just get creative and add a bit of this and that, and keep it simple.

FRUIT PIZZA

Ingredients:
Two tubes sugar cookie dough
8 ounces softened cream cheese
Big jar of Marshmallow Cream
Diced fruits of your choice
Flavored powdered sugar (optional)

Grease a sheetcake pan. (I like to use butter Pam or a generic brand, I find it doesn't tend to burn the crust like butter or cooking oil.)

Spread the cookie dough on the pan. Bake for about 10-15 minutes at 375. (For the last couple of minutes, I turn it to broil to make sure the top gets done).

Set crust aside to cool.

Mix the softened cream cheese and marshmallow cream together. I just use a spoon and "elbow grease", but a mixer can be used as well.

Dice the fruits of your choice. For presentation, I like to make it colorful. Red and white grapes, kiwi, strawberries, blueberries, peaches, and apples are good. Just depends on your taste. I also like bananas, however they should either be put on right before served, or dip them in a tad of lemon juice before, as they tend to get brown very quickly.

After the cookie crust is cooled, ice with the cream cheese-marshmallow mix. Top with the fruit mixture. Sprinkle with a flavored powdered sugar if desired, and ENJOY!

Would love to get your recipes, they sound great!

Kerry Cheese Cake, errrrr Cherry Cheese Cake. Lots of Philly Cream Cheese and Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk. Plenty of cherries on top and a nice golden brown graham cracker and butter crust.

I'm a fan of the love that dares not speak its name, Christmas fruitcake. Even though this may the most sneered-at goodie of all time, there are enough of us remaining that fruitcake is still made at a secret underground facility in Texas (http://collinstreetbakery.com/). From there, special federal agents bring it to the tiny minority of remaining fruitcake fanatics.

Fruitcake from the Collins Street Bakery is good! (Years ago, a boss would get me one every Christmas.) ... Best part of 'em are the pecans!

Nice tagline. My Mom used to tell me "You can put pearls on a pig and call her Monique, but a pig is still just a pig." (Funny how that came to mind when I first heard the name Monica Lewinsky.)

Real Southern Peach Cobbler ...warm with vanilla ice cream on the side

You know, off the top of my head, I wouldn't have chosen this. But giving it some thought, peach cobbler w/a side of ice cream is a wonderful dessert. Nowadays, tho, there isn't enough insulin in the world to let me have any.

Of desserts that I can eat now, a scoop of a very good chocolate ice cream is still wonderful.

Depends on the season.

In summer, give me a bowl of sliced honeydew, blueberries and strawberries (maybe with a little whipped cream).

Holidays each have their own, such as pecan pie for Thanksgiving (baked w/ a little bourbon and chocolate).

Overall,though? Chocolate chip cookies.
