Election: It's the Cat People vs. the Dog Lovers Written by Burt Prelutsky Sunday, August 15, 2004
All the pundits who are forecasting the November election, busily analyzing blue states, red states, and those all-important purple swing states, are spinning their wheels. At the risk of sounding even more presumptuous than usual, I contend that they are wasting their time and yours. If you want to know who's going to emerge victorious, all you really need to do is find out how many people have cats living with them and how many have dogs. The cat people, I have decided, will go overwhelmingly for Kerry; the dog lovers will do the same for Bush. It isn't simply that women, who often prefer felines to canines, tend to vote Democratic. It really goes to the nature of the animals........

He's a little (not so little anymore) Blue Point. I had a Blue Point for 16 years until I had to put him to sleep last February. I found his (Simon's) old papers and actually looked up his breeder.
Turns out she's still cranking out wonderful (but expensive) little meezer monsters, and Canoe is actually related to my departed Simon. I think Canoe's great-great-great-grandfather was Simon's half-brother!
Needless to say, he's been wonderful. Certainly a handful, but he always makes me smile.

Here's the bad news : there are more cats in the US than dogs.
But there's good news too : most of the cats are living in groups of 20 with crazy old ladies.

I am compelled to respond to every comment about Black Labs. My Solitare and Jackie are standing at my left arm insisting.
Solitare has pawed my arm 5 times now wanting me to speak up for her.
I'm not sure of their political leanings yet but I think they are becoming more pro Bush.
I am basing this on their growing up and becoming both more intelligent and their vast improvement in self control.
Although both of them were adorable puppies as was your Bart, I thought I had a couple of dummies when they were puppies.
Despite them being adorable, lab puppy eyes are not particularly intelligent looking.
At about 8 months , I found my girls were looking different, it was more than just getting bigger, and their faces elongating.
Their faces were becoming more noble and their eyes were acquiring the look of intelligence and lovingness that labs are known for.
They moved from all play and no responsibility (democrats), to acting responsible, wanting to understand and follow the rules . They want to be contributing members of my family. They are my first alert system, and they know the difference between what is my property and what is theirs.
I guess they are more conservative than I thought. Putting it into words clarified it for me. They know my property and respect that it is mine. Something the neosocialist party does not know or respect.

I think we're all underestimating the intellect of our porcine friends.
Snowball:
I am truly brilliant. The other animals on this farm will obey my commands.
Napoleon:
I don't think so!
(Napoleon, with a secret police force composed primarily of dogs, stages a putsch. Snowball is eliminated from his seat of power. Despotism reigns on cat v. dog thread.)

Siamese Sam always makes me smile, but all the girls (cats) do. Sam taught the other three female felines to talk and now this place is like a Disney attraction. Thank God they're all Republicans!
Sam is my first Siamese in decades and I'd forgotten how amazing they are.

Are there exceptions to the rule?

Though I knew the part about the Arkansans entering the White House sans dog, I didn't know about all the "committee work" over Buddy. But I certainly had the feeling that Buddy was decorative... I also remember reading somewhere that one of Reagan's or Bush's dogs was sent back to the ranch. There was a dustup about it because the peta folks (or could it have been Doris Day) chastised the president for alienating the dog. But it turned out that the dog missed its freer life and wanted to be home. And who wouldn't?
By the way, one of my pups is a populist, but the other is a Republican. My cat, however, is an arch Conservative.

I once had a Shih Tzu that was a very good mouser. She killed quickly, with no mess, and left the limp carcass in the middle of the room so I'd see it and dispose of it. The mutt I have now is a good hunter, but very messy. She likes to fling the mouse against the wall, pick it up, fling it again, and again, and again. When she gets done, it looks like a crime scene. If a murder ever actually occurs in this house, the cops will go crazy analyzing all the blood samples.
