I'm being told by a reliable source that Unfit for Command may debut as number one one the NYT bestseller list. However, I do have a few questions...
1) In what week will it debut?
2) Will the NYT now have to review the book?
3) Will this affect the ability of the media to ignore it?
4) If it has been #1 on amazon, BN, etc. for quite some time, why hasn't it already hit the list?
You'll have to excuse my ignorance here, but I'm not really familiar with book list procedures at the NYT.
P.S. Please don't FReepmail me about my source - it shall remain anonymous.
I went to Waldons books at the local mall and asked about the book. The clerk told me that they didn't have any copies available because the release date had been pushed back to September. I was thinking, "huh??". But I told her I'd be back.
We have to make this book number one.
My maternal grandmother spoke only Yiddish, and I am fairly familiar with a lot of everyday words. "Dreck" always had a stronger connotation than "schmutz." If you did a white-glove inspection and ran your finger down a door frame, the stuff on your glove would definitely be "schmutz," not "dreck." If you stepped off a curb into something a Rottweiller had deposited in the gutter, that would clearly be "dreck." A book written by a Clinton or any democrat would obviously be "dreck." A book such as "Tropic of Cancer" might be called "schmutz" (because it's "dirty") or "dreck" (if the reader believed that it was "crap.")
That's obviously BS, since B&N is selling the book on their website. I have a (retired) friend who regularly makes the round of bookstores (in South Florida) to check out how they're displaying/stocking conservative books. She regularly has to "special order" even those books which are currently on the best-seller list, and even then, the service is incredibly sloppy and slow.
The local Barnes & Noble is the worst in this regard.
I order most of my books from Amazon, or NRO Book Service. The only time I've ordered from B&N in the past few years is when I was looking for a specific copy of the Koran for reference -- Barnes & Noble had the widest selection of Korans available of anywhere I looked. That says something.
The release date has not been pushed back, but it could be that they are waiting for the 4th printing to get their copies. What actually happened was that the publisher brought up the release date from Sept. to now because of the interest over the Swiftboat TV ad. It will take the publisher a bit of time to get caught up, they are currently fulfilling sales from pre-paid orders for the book.
You can ask Books-A-Million to order you a copy. Thats how I got mine.
I am also tired of being told that books cannot get to the West Coast and are only avilable on the east coast. Of course Al Frankin, Marine Dowd, and Bill Clinton's books do not have such transportation problems.
I have experienced this problem with nearly every conservative book that has been released since I moved to California. There is absolutely no excuse for the censorship imposed on California by the book stores. I am tired of being polite about the issue.
As an avid reader, it is a shame that I cannot walk into a local book store and buy what I want to read without being treated like they are doing me a favor by refusing to sell me a book.
Couple of recommendations here:
1) go back and immediately ask to speak with a manager. Tell them about our concerns.
2) Complain to the company, you can contact Borders here:

Publicize this on blogs or in the LA Times.

Yes, I'm a member of their......................whatever that thing is! ;-)
Guess I'll order it and save 10%.
"... I won't ever patronize B&N in the future...."
Because of a similar experience, I deal with Amazon.com only! I find them extremely dependable.
I live in the Detroit suburbs. Went to Barnes and Knoble and was told no books had arrived. Went to Borders and they were sold out, having only ordered FIVE books.
Don't count on it. It will only swing the swing voters. Liberals don't care about the character or morals of their candidate. All they care about is more feeding from the govt trough.
That's just what I've been saying all along. My post stated that most people (including swing voters) get their news/commentary from network TV and that we must put pressure on those networks (and cable stations) to report this matter as it deserves to be reported.
We all know that this election outcome will depend on the vote of that small percentage of the electorate that constitutes the swing voters. That's all that's up for grabs. Everybody else already knows how he's going to vote. That's why Kerry is making such a big deal of his military service. That's why Kerry appropriated conservative themes in his acceptance speech and on the campaign trail -- to attract the swing voters. He already knows he has the liberal vote tied up.
There's a small privately owned bookstore in Capitola, CA that I willing to bet won't carry it. They don't carry gun, hunting or fishing magazines either. I wonder if the Waldens in Capitola Mall will carry it. If anyone is in that area maybe they could check and report it on this thread. I'm in Montana now. :^)
I declined their offer to place an order for it, and they seemed pleased when I said "I'll just get it from Amazon, thank-you".
Release of Kerry's records could go best seller, make a bundle if he can afford it.
