I'm being told by a reliable source that Unfit for Command may debut as number one one the NYT bestseller list. However, I do have a few questions...
1) In what week will it debut?
2) Will the NYT now have to review the book?
3) Will this affect the ability of the media to ignore it?
4) If it has been #1 on amazon, BN, etc. for quite some time, why hasn't it already hit the list?
You'll have to excuse my ignorance here, but I'm not really familiar with book list procedures at the NYT.
P.S. Please don't FReepmail me about my source - it shall remain anonymous.
Sounds like your bookstore is operating WAY out of bounds. Believe sKerry's goons and the DNC threatened everyone they could think of with lawsuits, but if your store didn't intend to sell them, why did they accept the order when it arrived? You might try reporting them to the State Attorney General's office, with a cc: of your complaint to Governor Schwartzenegger. Seems to me the Better Business Bureau might be able to zap them on Unfair Business Practices. It's up to you, of course, but I think it's very dangerous to start letting people get away with Nazi tactics.

1 AMERICAN SOLDIER, by Tommy Franks with Malcolm McConnell. (ReganBooks/HarperCollins, $27.95.) A memoir by the former head of the United States Central Command.
Only if people like you and me lend them our constant, unstinting support. They are out there alone. They need our continuing contributions and they need our voices. That means speaking up in letters to editors, emails to network and cable shows, radio call-ins, spreading the word in every possible way.
A few Sundays ago I went to an open house nearby, because it had just been put on the market and I'd always been impressed by it from the outside. The inside turned out to be much less than I'd expected, but it was the little things I found more interesting.
For example, the John Kerry bumper sticker on the car. The unhealthy quantity of books about the Kennedys located in every room of the house, from what looked to be a first edition of "A Thousand Days" to the sleaziest supermarket mass-market quickies about JFK Jr.'s plane crash. The Al Franken and Molly Ivins books, all carefully lined up side-by-side in the bookshelves going up the main staircase, appearing to have never even had their spines cracked, while all the books surrounding them (mostly Clive Cussler and Tom Clancy novels) were so beaten up from having been read dozens of times that you probably couldn't get a quarter for them on eBay.
But the coup de grace was what I found in the study. There, on the desk, was a Michael Moore "Stupid White Men" page-a-day calendar. It had not a bit of dust on it; the homeowner was obviously quite proud of having it stand out on his desk, and wanted to make sure all the househunters saw it. So proud was he that after taking it out of the box and unwrapping the plastic, he couldn't bear to rip off the front page, with its newsprint-quality reproduction of the "SWM" book's front cover (the one with Fat Boy holding a plunger and smirking for no apparent reason), and begin to actually use it (and read the information contained on each page).
I went up to the desk to take a closer look, because I couldn't believe that the guy still wouldn't be using it even though we were well into July.
It was then that I noticed why he'd never started tearing off the daily pages: Because it was a 2003 calendar. I can only guess that he acquired it purely to have a mini-Moore shrine on his desk. Contents? Who cares about the words?
Thanks for the report. I won't ever patronize B&N in the future.
The NYTimes Book Review section is delivered with the Saturday edition edition of the paper, along with the real estate and other assorted weekend sections.
The #1 bestseller, My Life, by Bubba is misplaced on the non-fiction list.
No one seems to know exactly how the NYT determines its bestsellers. Amazon and B&N are obvious, they have sales records. The NYT purportedly "polls" selected bookstores around America. They have always refused to disclose their methods.
It will be interesting to see whether there is a review of the book when the new Book Review section comes out next Friday.
Christopher Hitchens reviews three Bush bash books in the current (Aug 15 ) edition.
Bush Did.
That, IMO, is what needs to to be placed in front of the American voter and kept there. I make sure to say it to people every day.
When they say "no,"
Tell them "I'm really impresed with your large collection of 'hate-Bush' titles. The Democrats won't be able to accuse Borders of not kissing the DNC's butt!
Wow..excellent reviews!
I thought that was a german word for 'dirt'
That is making me very angry!! And this is happening in America, the Land of the Free....grrrrr
Thanks
I thought that was a german word for 'dirt'
I think we are both right. Of course, Yiddish is derived from several languages, primarily German.
From an online dictionary:
NOUN: Slang Trash, especially inferior merchandise. ETYMOLOGY: German, dirt, trash and Yiddish drek, excrement, both from Middle High German drec, from Old High German.
I was born and raised in Germany, Northern Baveria. My grandmother used this word a lot (Dreck). It's definitely slang, because the proper german word would be "Schmutz" :)
My review:
As an undecided voter I picked up this book to help clear up stories that I had heard Kerry tell.
I had thought by his tales of heroic acts of war that he was in-country for years, not just a few short months. I was unaware that his purple hearts were what would be described by any mother as a boo boo.
I do have a question, how did the author decide which face of Kerry's to use on the cover. In the past year with all of Kerry's surgery, chemical peels, veniers and botox, he had so many to choose from. I believe the cover is Kerry's face from late April-early May.
There is a very good review of the book, here:

Delayed from appearing on the shelves where I am on the east coast...the Clinton book as been elevated to the front table as you walk in the door along with Tommy Franks. I plan on a walk-in buy of the book. I inquired to the interest in the book and they have a waiting list!
we need to keep the calls going into the bookstores!!! I have written to Barnes & Noble on their delay for releasing the book to the stores. I have mentioned all the hate Bush and hate Republicans books so entitled on their tables! Let's be fair!
