Fellow FReepers,
One of our active members in the Illinois chapter, Unspun, has created an e-petition calling on Republican leaders on both the state and national level to immediately fully fund and support the U.S. Senate campaign of Dr. Alan L. Keyes.
I'm posting this on FR because all freepers across America are welcomed and encouraged to sign. And after you do, please forward it to others you know:
A re-elected President George W. Bush and our nation NEED Alan Keyes to assume Peter Fitzgerald's Senate seat. Fitzgerald was elected running as unapologetic conservative and that's exactly what Keyes is doing. Alan Keyes CAN win this election but only through the national efforts of conservatives everywhere. He is jumping into the race during the time of crisis when the Democrats are way ahead on fundraising.
It is especially important for Ambassador Keyes' wonderful voice of insightful American statesmanship and conscience to be heard in the Senate, instead of the liberal extremity represented by Barack Obama's Illinois State Senate votes.
This petition simply calls for Republican leaders to unite, to:
1. Introduce Alan Keyes to the campaign contributors they know.
2. Encourage the volunteers they know, to work for Dr. Keyes.
3. Strongly endorse Alan Keyes and work with his campaign
The time is short in this unique and historic campaign. The eyes of the nation are upon it. Alan Keyes' message must get to all the voters of Illinois.
The above link explains further. Opening it, you will see that this petition is starting to be being signed by dedicated Illinoisans and other Americans of principle, including grass roots and political leaders.
Won't you add your your name and town to the list?
The link to the petition itself is:

Thank you! Please pass it on! BUMP this thread!
He's fulfilling the LETTER of the residency requirement, but he's completely ignoring the INTENT of the residency requirement.
He's on record multiple times as saying carpetbagging is wrong, and yet he's carpetbagging. That's making himself a liar.
I'm not campaigning against a good senatorial candidate. I'm campaigning against an INVALID person who shouldn't even BE a candidate (at least not for the office he's gunning for). There is absoultely no way that out of the 2.5 MILLION registered Republicans in Illinois there are no good candidates, that is the lie of the Illinois GOP. And if they're telling the truth then there's problems there Keyes sure can't fix. This whole thing is a train wreck, Keyes validates Hillary, by picking him the Illinois GOP has just thrown in the towel for at least 6 years, it's not going to slow Obama down a bit, and it takes away Keyes from campaigning nationally. All around a stupid idea that both the Illinois GOP and Keyes should have been above.
Oh, look, a rose between two thorns!
disc, you wanna get a room?
I'll fill the ice bucket, you bring the wine.
The intent is clear, if they'd wanted people from Maryland to run for Senate in Illkinois they wouldn't have bothered to include a residency requirement in the first place.
Since bringing in Keyes is not only not a winning move, it's a pathetic losing move, he won't win. The poll shows people aren't even towing the party line for him, 28% with less than 90 days to go, he's toast, he will lose, badly, it will take the direct hand of God to get him over 40%.
It didn't take gravitas for Keyes to go back on his word, it took deception and a lack of character. It took a willingness to sacrifice him principles and go back on his word.
I haven't agreed his motive was to save lives. I've agreed that's what he SAID, but thanks to his actions I no longer believe anything Keyes says, he has proven to not be a man of his word. He is an opportunist, he is a carpetbagger, he is not to be trusted, he is an invalid candidate running for an office he doesn't deserve and bringing down the Illinois GOP in the process and possibly harming the national party.
It appears you are so offended by a behavior that you refuse to understand what it was about.
I understand what it was about entirely, Keyes went back on his word. And yes people violating their principles does offend me.
Words, and whether one heeds to them or goes back on them, must have contexts. Hillary's context was night and day different than Alan's present context.
The context is identical, both running for office they have absoultely no right for at all. 100% identical, 100% carpetbaggers, 100% scum. And none of the apologia proffered can change the simple FACT that a man who lives in Maryland should never run for office anywhere OTHER than MARYLAND.
d, in the context of tou entire discussion and my well settled understanding of the matter, I think I'll let your last comment stand without further argument.

I wish Keyes the best but donate your money to the guy running against Tom Daschle he has a better chance. Spend the money on guys who have better shots!
When people violate their own principles then its between them and God. I know that not keeping your word can hurt others, but it hurts the person not keeping their word the most. The Bible talks about keeping our word--even to our own harm. Thats tough talk.
I give Keyes a pass because I can't believe he is completely untrustworthy. I have not always kept my word. I don't think he'll win and I'm beginning to think the man is never going to win an election.
Its a different thing though if it is in the Constitution--which to my shame, I did not know this other than people in states are to represented. States can't choose who they wish to represent them? Is it unconstitutional what Keyes is doing?
It's between them and God all the way up until they ask for money from me, then I get to decide if they're principled enough for my money.
I'm not giving him the pass for a few reasons:
the residency thing is important to me, always has been
violating his word for a losing effort is not only untrustworthy, but not very bright
this hurts the national GOP
this whole this is a sad display of towel throwing by the Ill GOP
Well it looks like they actually expect me to work today, sad but true.
Uh, we are counting days here....
RINO is not just a term in IL but an institution.
....youmaybewrongbutyoumayberight.......but I just might be the lunatic your looking for....
That right you're counting days, and your candidate polled at 28%. The days you're counting are to Obama's inaugeration, because the Ill GOP screwed up royally.
This is great Billy!
I am going to spread it around ;)
