Clash And Kerry
WaPo ^ | August 7, 2004 | John F. Harris

Democratic presidential nominee John F. Kerry and wife Teresa Heinz Kerry are not quite on the same script when it comes to whether President Bush responded appropriately in the stunned first moments when he learned on Sept. 11, 2001, that a plane had struck the World Trade Center.

On Thursday, Kerry told a convention of minority journalists that he would have reacted more decisively to the news than Bush, who continued reading with a group of Florida schoolchildren for seven minutes after an aide whispered the news into his ear. It's a scene that filmmaker Michael Moore uses to skewer the president in his anti-Bush movie, "Fahrenheit 9/11."

"I would have told those kids very nicely and politely that the president of the United States has something that he needs to attend to," Kerry said.

The candidate's wife, on the other hand, is not so sure an abrupt response would have been the right one. "I think the president behaved correctly in terms of being quiet amidst stunning news like that in a classroom of kids," she told the host of MSNBC's "Hardball With Chris Matthews" during an interview before the Democratic National Convention last month.

Kerry needs a new campaign motto. "Kerry: for those who like a little cognitive dissonance with their politics"

I cannot believe that Tearassa Hinds said something intelligent. Must have been a slip-up.

> ... Kerry told a convention of minority journalists that
> he would have reacted more decisively to the news ...

a. He didn't.
b. Other than leaving the stage, just WHAT would he have
done differently?

Kerry admits to just sitting in Daschle's office for the
35 or so minutes between the 2nd WTC hit and the Pentagon
hit. Unlike Bush in FL, there was a jet out there heading
Kerry's way, and he needed to take action (evacuate), and
didn't until a nearby explosion finally got his attention.

And just what could have been done differently, by the
President, in the 7 minutes after WTC2? Kerry's
hindsighting doesn't address this.

You should wake up. If Theresa loved her first husband so much how can she take his money and support Kerry? Closet Republican ?? No she is a closet power freak. She married her best opportunity to get into the White House. Do not be fooled by Theresa's purported love of her first husband, she loves Theresa and seeks power for Theresa.

This is so much B.S.! When the plane first hit, NOBODY thought it was a terrorist act, they all thought it was an accident. I'm sure when Bush was first told, they were still trying to figure out what was going on, it wasn't until the second plane hit that it became apparent that we were being attacked. Of course we'll never hear this on any news program.

True, and my understanding is that Bush was informed of
this before he went to read with the kids. He even
approved a draft of a statement on assistance to NYC.

It was the second strike that caused the whisper in
GW's ear. Do we know exactly what was said to him?

I suspect that if the whisper had included
"... and we need some decisions made."
or
"... and there are other developments.",
GW would have excused himself.

> Of course we'll never hear this on any news program.

What we won't hear is how Kerry responded, nor what
exactly might have been done differently.
