Coming to D.C. to Pay Tribute to President Reagan? Check in Here
June 7, 2004 | Kristinn

Posted on 06/07/2004 5:38:08 AM PDT by kristinn

The D.C. Chapter of Free Republic will try to act as a welcoming committee and clearing house of information for FReepers coming to Washington, D.C. this week to pay tribute to President Reagan.

If you are planning on coming to D.C. from out of town, or from around here, please check in on this thread during the week. We'll try to coordinate meetings points for those who desire to gather with fellow FReepers.

Offical schedule in D.C. according to the AP:

5 p.m. Wednesday: Coffin arrives at Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington.

6 p.m.: Formal funeral procession to the Capitol, with coffin transfer onto horse-drawn caisson at 1600 Constitution Ave., an open area near the White House and the Washington Monument.

7 p.m.: State funeral ceremony in Capitol Rotunda.

8:30 p.m.: Lying in state begins in rotunda and continues through the night.

Thursday: Lying in state continues for 24 hours in the rotunda.

10:45 a.m. Friday: Motorcade leaves the Capitol.

11:30 a.m.: National funeral service at the National Cathedral.

1:45 p.m.: Motorcade leaves National Cathedral. Coffin is flown back to California.

The federal government will be closed on Friday. I'm not sure about the local government or what the traffic and parking situation will be that day. Rest assured, however, that security will be tight this week.

It looks like the main things we'll be doing is paying our respects along the procession routes on Wednesday and Friday, and waiting in line at the Capitol to view President Reagan's flag-draped coffin.

Please bring American flags, large posters of President Reagan and signs bearing messages honoring him and his legacy that we can hold on the procession routes.

Feel free to add suggestions and ideas on this thread for tributes and meeting places.

Metro Bus timetables are available online. Union Station is just a couple of blocks from the US Capitol and Constitution Ave.

To answer your question about Nixon's funeral, It is the choice of each president's family as to weather or not to have a state funeral or a smaller one like Nixon's. I guess the Nixon family did not wish a state funeral.

"I just heard on Fox News that people waited 18 hours to view Nixon"

I can't imagine a grown up standing in line for 18 hours. I know I couldn't.

FOX News showed Nancy Reagan arriving at the Funeral Home in California a few minutes.

LOTS of beautiful flowers, wreaths, etc. there.

I'm coming. Still working out details with my "ride".

Richmond Freeper, Alpheus, sent this email yesterday in tribute to President Reagan that I would like to share with you:

Sunday, June 6, 2004

Good Morning to All Conservatives, and those Americans who will receive this message;

By now I am sure that all of you have heard of the death this weekend of Ronald Reagan. I would like to share with you, the sense of loss that I feel from this announcement. Our country has seen the last days of one of its greatest leaders.

I can say to you truthfully, that in some amount, I stand before you as the President of United Conservatives of Virginia, because of Ronald Reagan.

It was his speeches where I first heard about lower taxes, rugged individualism, love of America and patriotism, and good-old-fashioned conservativism.

Coming from a black liberal political household in the '70s, Ronald Reagan was not a topic that brought out good vibrations. Upon taking the time to listen to him and his speeches, I learned that I had more in common with conservatives than I did with the political leaders that I was brought up to admire.

It is he, and the association with other good conservatives, that brought me to the political realization where I am today. For this, though he never knew me, I am and will ever be grateful.

President Bush has called for all American flags to be flown at half-staff for this month, and with this I will gladly participate. I feel in my heart that we are entering a different time. We will have to be even more vigilant in our pursuit of conservativism. There are those who will now make their move to revise and revision all of what has happened with President Reagan. I call on everyone to be aware, and if needed we will be there to shout if necessary and voice the truth of what is and will be one of the greatest presidencies in the history of this country.

My love and prayers are with Nancy Reagan and her family as they proceed to move on in their lives without a great man who has been key in their lives. God's blessing to all.

Sincerely,

Alpheus Pope
President,
United Conservatives of Virginia

Kristinn, Kathy, Diane,

Since it appears that so many FReepers are coming to the city, should we try to put together a "get-together?"

As it looks like right now, I should have both Thursday and Friday free.

Dave

More like a phone tree with the FReeper at the head of the line going into the Capitol, rounding up the rest.

If anyone is going to Southern California or Washington D. C. from Northern California (SF Bay Area) to attend the Reagan memorial activities and has an empty seat in their car, I'd appreciate a ride.

Please contact me (Michael Robison) at mrobison@lycos.com

Thank you
