The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to intervene in the same-sex marriages law in Mass. Truly a sad day for America.

perhaps that is true - in a public opinion poll. But democracy is not exercised through Gallup and Zogby. How many people in Massachusetts would actually VOTE to change the law, change the elected officials, who would impeach the judges - do whatever it takes to overturn this?

The votes aren't there for it, the real votes, the ones that count, in the booth on election day. They simply are not there. This is a state that elects a drunken murderer to the US Senate.

It's one of the most lame arguments against same-sex marriage that I've heard (and believe me, I've heard some lame arguments from both sides).

So do I, I was asking somewhat incredulously. This whole "sky is falling" thing is nonsense. I'm one of the people who have not been given a valid reason to be against gay marriage. Of course, not being a member of a religion that tells people what to think might be a part of that.

I think that my personal favourite argument is the paranoid delusional claim that proponents of same-sex marriage don't actually want marital benefits for same-sex couples, but are really plotting and conspiring to destroy the civil institution of marriage altogether, as part of a grand plan to destroy Christianity. They honestly believe that same-sex couples who claim a desire for legal recognition of their relationship are actually lying about what they want and that they're really deliberately and knowingly trying to bring about an end to western civilization.

Well, there is a slight problem with trying to marry someone who is already married.

Marriage as it is creates an exclusive contract between two individuals. As a result of this contract, the two individuals gain special benefits and legal protections with respect to certain dealings with one another, some of which would not translate well if you attempted to add a third, fourth or nth person to the mix, such as inheritance issues (currently the sole spouse gets everything unless a will designates otherwise, what happens when you have two spouses? How would you split the estate), and the matters regarding dissolution of the spousal agreement (more on that in a moment). Another problem is whether your spouses are only married to you or are also married to one another through your mutual marriage -- this can create problems should you want to divorce one of your spouses, because you have to deal with whether or not they're still legally considered related to one another. I don't even want to get into child custody issues.

Now, allowing same-sex marriage does not require any radical restructuring of the legal rights and benefits granted through a civil marriage contract. You just remove the gender restriction and let the two same-gendered parties go on with all of the same legal rights and benefits granted an opposite-sex couple. However, if you start letting marriage be between polygamous parties, you have to completely reconsider and rewrite quite a bit of the rights and benefits granted.

In other words, allowing polygamous marriage after allowing same-sex marriage isn't that simple, certainly not as simplistic as going from two-party opposite-sex only civil marriage to two-party gender-neutral civil marriage.

I will admit, twenty years ago, I was as anti-gay as the most extreme here. Somewhere along the line, I came to know people who were homosexual, and they became less frightening. I would suppose that for people who have not come to know any gay people, the apparent sudden surge of gay rights must be quite alarming.

I remember it was quite a cause for concern in the 1960's when some white neighbors of mine saw civil rights for black people rising. They saw the worst of the black power movement, such as Eldridge Cleaver and Huey Long, and decided all black people must be like them, and would kill white people if they had the chance.
