Moms Unleash Their Anguish, Anger Thousands March to End Gun Violence, Renew Assault Weapons Ban

By Eric Rich and Theola Labbé Washington Post Staff Writers Monday, May 10, 2004; Page B01

Several thousand people, most of them women, gathered on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol yesterday for the largest gun-control demonstration in four years, a loud and calculated effort aimed at forcing President Bush to renew the soon-to-expire federal ban on assault weapons.

The rally lacked the star power, and certainly the numbers, of the first Million Mom March in 2000, when hundreds of thousands of women flooded the Mall on Mother's Day. Organizers this time put the crowd at close to 3,000, a figure that could not be confirmed because police no longer estimate crowd sizes.

But the smaller turnout was expected, organizers said, and sufficient to kick off a nationwide campaign aimed at renewing the ban before it expires Sept. 13. The moms, who have joined with the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, hope public pressure will force Bush to stand by campaign pledges supporting the extension of the popular ban.

I watched a gangster episode on the history channel tonite. Lucky Luciano killed many men. His weapon of choice: an ice pick and baseball bat, amidst easy to obtain thompson submachine guns. When will they learn its not the weapon but the person.

Gun control was a big issue in 2000 -- and it cost Bush a bunch with white women.

Four years later this issue is gone and national security is prominent. The "soccer mom" marchers from 2000 are now mostly "Security Moms."

Charter Arms Bulldog Pug in 44 special. Lightweight, 44 caliber ,not a magnum, much lower recoil. Very good everyday carry rig. Cheap and reliable and very accurate with CCI blazer ammunition in the 200 grain Gold Dot Hollow Point version.

My Girl Friday , My Sister and My 70 year old Mom has one and they have no trouble with the recoil. Give one a try before ya buy ! I think you'll like it.

Stay Safe !

I understand their feelings and fears, however misplaced. What does a mom do when she is alone at night with her child, and a not-so-nice person with bad intents decides to break into the home? Yeah, 9-1-1 is nice, but in the time it may take the police to respond, do they realize what could happen? I wonder, as mothers, do they ever think about that? I know that anyone who breaks into my house (that's unwanted, unwelcome, unexpected) isn't there to borrow a cup of sugar! Once again, it's good intentions aiming at the wrong target!

I'm thinking more along the lines of some kind of shotgun. lol I have no depth perception, none. If someone is close enough for me to hit them, they're most likely close enough to wrestle any single projectile weapon away from me.
