Owens Won't Run For Senate

DENVER (News 4) Gov. Bill Owens will not running for U.S. Senate, News 4 reports.

News 4 has confirmed that Owens will make the announcement at 1 p.m. Watch his announcement live on the home page of news4colorado.com at that time.

Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell, 70, said last week that he would not seek re-election to a third term in a surprise announcement that came after two hospital visits for stress-related heartburn.

Owens won re-election in 2002 with 65 percent of the vote and has been mentioned as a possible cabinet member in a second Bush administration and even as a vice presidential candidate.

GOP Congressman Scott McInnis, long interested in the Senate, said that if he decides to run, he won't be deterred no matter who is in the race.

Other potential Republican candidates include Rep. Tom Tancredo, Rep. Bob Beauprez and Rep. Marilyn Musgrave.

Democratic Congressman Mark Udall is reconsidering an earlier decision not to run.

Democratic Congresswoman Diana DeGette is also thinking about seeking the Senate seat. Spokesman Josh Freed said she will make a decision soon.

Attorney General Ken Salazar, also a Democrat, told The Pueblo Chieftain last week that he is contemplating a Senate bid.

1. If Republicans lose this seat, Owens' already tenuous presidential hopes are severely diminished

2. Looks like McInnis and Udall will run

3. If Tancredo runs, he will no longer hold elective office by 2005.

GOP Congressman Scott McInnis

I saw this guy on CSPAN a lot. I thought HE was Tancredo when I had heard of but not seen Tancredo.

EVERYONE does not hire illegals. And lots of those who do, know.

Tom Tancredo did NOT hire any illegals.

You are simply hurling around false allegations and it's disgusting.

Tom Tancredo did NOT hire any illegals.

He hired a company that used them in his home and did nothing.

I think you are both right.

Tancredo does not have the best chance of winning and that's one reason why I support McInnis first.

If Tancredo did win the primary his biggest problem would be the leftwing trying to paint him as a racist. Then of course there are the wingnuts on the far, far right who wouldn't be happy because he isn't a racist.

Not that it really matters since you have no say in it but who would you like to see run in Colorado?

Optimal strategy here was to have Campbell run for re-election and then resign, letting Owens name a replacement who would have incumbency in his favor in 2010 when next up for re-election. I'm surprised this was not done. Perhaps it still could be.

The chosen replacement would run in a special election in 2006.

I agree that McInnis is the best candidate, although I also think others could win the seat, like Coffman or perhaps Beauprez. I would prefer that Beauprez hold onto his swing district with his incumbency advantage.

I also agree Tancredo is too polarizing to win unless the Dims rip themselves to shreds in a primary. Allard and Beauprez were both helped in close races by Catholic, Hispanic pro-lifers who were turned off by the Dims' pro-abortion rhetoric. Tancredo wouldn't get those votes.

I've never heard this strategy and it doesn't seem to fit Campbell's personality.

DOH!!!

Owens would have made sure this wasn't a contest. I think it would have been a good move politically as well. I wonder why he isn't doing it?

I'm a little surprised Bob Shaffer is on the list. He doesn't have much name recognition outside his old district. I agree he'd make a terrific Senator, though.

Is everyone who goes to McDonald's a criminal? Or any other fast food restaurants. And most other restaurants.

Owens has made it official.

So has ReGrette. She won't be running. Too bad. It would have been a good chance to get rid of her.
