Banning slavery was a bad idea? Suuure it was. Or the 11th or 12th or 15th or 20th or 21st? Apparently you are not real familiar with the ACTUAL constitution.

However, there is no need for a constitutional amendment to stop this madness. Congress should use the "Exceptions clause" to remove the jurisdiction of the Court from ruling on the constitutionality of bans.

And Bush has adopted the right tone. He wants a marriage amendment, but leaves room for various state legislatures to adopt civil union practices.

Like it or not, civil unions may be an abomination to some here, but in California or New York, people will have no problem with it.

Be Seeing You,

Chris

I don't think the feds ought to tell states they can't have whatever legal arrangements they want for consenting adults in their states. So, civil unions are best left to the states.

The reason to do the amendment at all is the impact of the 14th amendment, with its "full faith and credit clause."

Bush Backs Amendment Banning Gay Marriage

Now if the boy would just develop a pair for something substantive like going AGAINST the semiauto ban renewal or cutting his "drunken sailor" spending spree.

Abusive ad hominem. I enjoy such high-minded debate.

Please don't be asinine. Under the Constitution, the President has absolutely no part in the amendment process, other than what he is doing right now. He can lend his voice and support, but that is all. And if you don't understand the importance of timing in the political process, then you have a problem. If Bush had come out for the amendment earlier, he would have been accused of creating a problem that didn't exist, just for political gain. Now that the issue has become so visible (thanks to the libs themselves), Bush has a firm foundation of public support to fight for this amendment.

I have personally talked to 4 freepers and several (at least 5) people in my community who have children or family members (sisters, brothers) who left their marriage to marry gay people.

I don't think you have a point on that one.

My grandmother left my grandfather years ago to live with her "friend."

WWKS (What will Kerry say)??

"Those of us who fought in the jungles of Vietnam know how divisive a ban on gay marriage is. In all my years of public service I've never seen anything so brazen, so immoral, as what Bush is proposing. This is the most horrible thing ever done by the most horrible administration in human history. And no one better dare to criticize my various positions on this matter unless they themselves have war medals."

Did GSC once say something nice about Bush? What year?Source please...;)

Back during the 2002 elections he seemed to have plenty of nice things to say about Dubya and other Republicans. Probably before that, too, although I can't recall. But lately he seems to be suffering from KWS (Kerry Waffle Syndrome). I dunno.

No, what did he say? Did he cut and paste from speeches given by Musgrave and others in the House and Senate on this issue over the past 12 months?

It's counterproductive to re-do the work that's already been done.

This amendment protects us all from high handed judges who would overturn our expressed will, and allows legal protections that each State deems, by it's democratic repuplic legislative procedure (implying the majority of voters), right and necessary.

I sure do wish we had a human life amendment, though. Since I'm a big believer in efficiency, why not push both at the same time?

Kerry is going to have a problem on this with Catholics (especially Hispanics), Orthodox Jews, and Evangelicals. Bush, for his part, needs to play this moderately and insist that the voice of the people must be heard on this.

Chris

100% correct. *THIS* is the issue and why an amendment must happen.

I am in tears with thanksgiving to GOD for his courage and leadership.

Would it have been more courageous and shown more leadership to have embraced this last May?

The President explained why it's necessary: to protect the State's laws from being overturned by individual judges and courts.

Yes, it was a really good speech...listened on the car rdio while taking my son to school.

Heard on local talk radio this morning that a recent poll (sorry missed which one) said 61% support the President's position on this, up from 55% last year and that African-Americans and Hispanics are against same sex marriages in even higher numbers.
