Since its inception, Free Republic has been the world's premeire online gathering place for the discussion of the news, issues, opinions, and just about everything else.
There have been several times when the members of Free Republic have posted important breaking news stories first, scooping the outlets of the mainstream media.
Some exemplary threads merit mention in what I'd like to call the Free Republic Hall of Fame Threads.
I believe this is a good way to remember and share some of the most important discussions that have occured on Free Republic.

The recent Swartzenegger X Mc Clintock threads were the most painful to me...

I hope no one brings up that stupid Hobbit Hole thread. That one was the worst of all time. Didn't get invited?

Gotta be the "Pres. Bush is eating in an undisclosed location" thread. I read that early Thanksgiving morning, and am now kicking my butt for not "getting it". I would have been an icon in my family had I been able to announce it before the fact!

I liked the prayer thread for Jim Torricelli's toupee.
I laughed so hard I got a bellyache!

I hope no one brings up that stupid Hobbit Hole thread. BTW... I wouldn't have said anything about it, but since ~you~ brought it up, I will say that our third HH thread was the first thread ever to ever hit the 65,535 post limit.
The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads! (we filled it up!)

I'm a fairly new FReeper, have no idea what the "Hobbit Hole" threads are all about. I kind of feel like I'm back in Jr.High, before I filled out, when none of the boys asked me to dance....

I recall the two day long thread series that hole_in_one started (in Roman numerals, yet!) about the hearing before Judge N. Sanders Sauls (Go Sandy!) during Recount 2000.

Was Saul a Republican? IIRC, he was the circuit court judge in Seminole County, right.

I have marked some threads that I go back to every now and again. It is like a time capsule, to read about what is going on, as it is going on. It is fun to compare what we thought we knew then, compared to what we know now.
This has the makings for a fun thread.

The summer of 1998 was like a greatest hits all by itself, with all the Clinton (pending) impeachment threads. I remember telling the kids that we were watching the downfall of a presidency, minute by minute, right before our eyes on the internet (Free Republic).
I would nominate the big daddy of 'em all, the first thread I ever read on Free Republic - - the Drudge headline about Clinton and the intern, circa January 20, 1998.

Post #9 on the Tuna-beating thread:
The woman was seen carrying a shark later that day.
