Dean's Southern Strategy: Reaching Out to Hicks, Rednecks, Hillbillies, Crackers & Nascar Fans
November 5, 2003 | Pinochet

I'll bet that every Southern freeper, who watched Howard Dean in yesterday's CNN debate, could not help but shake his head in amazement. In trying to reach out to the South, Dean did not reach out to Southerners as people, but, instead, he reached out to a stereotype that many Northerners have of the South. It is not just a problem with Northern Democrats; I have seen the same attitude in some North-East Republicans. Everyone should make a point of reading Zell Miller's recent book, which he is now promoting.

All Southerners have ever wanted, is to be treated with respect. They want to be treated as normal people, not as caricatures and freaks. What Howard Dean should have done, is to talk to Southerners in the same manner as he would talk to people in his home state of Vermont, or as he talks to people in Iowa and New Hampshire. When he is reaching out to people in Iowa and New Hampshire, he treats them as regular Americans, not as freaks.

If Dean was smart, he would have focused on his past record as a defender of the second ammendment right to own guns while campaigning in the South, without talking about the Confederate flags and pickup trucks. He could also have talked about immigration, which has resulted in illegal aliens taking the jobs of so many poor Southerners (of all races). He could also have touched on some of the economic nationalism issues, that Pat Buchanan touched on in 1992 and 1996, about corporations shipping blue collar jobs to Mexico and China. And just as he has reached out to farmers in Iowa, he could have promised Southern farmers of more success in selling their products in export markets.

Unfortunately, North Eastern elitists do not see Southerners as normal people, but as backward, ignorant cavemen whom they look down on.

I kind of like maintaining the image of southern stereotypes we have here in the South. It acts as a scarecrow for no-it-all folk that hold those assumptions.

Hey, if'n ya throw some 'possum gravy on them grits, I'll take some. :)

Yall wanna talk bout Gene Pool? Mosey on over to Du Quoin, Illinois. Half the folks up there are identical. The school photographer done sold his camera years ago. He jus looks at the list of kids for the annual and pulls out pictures from his file by age and sex and sometimes he has to change a name or two.

ah need t'translate thet so ah can read it ...

I'll bet thet ev'ry Southern freeper, who watched Ebenezer Dean in yessuhterday's CNN debate, c'd not he'p but shake his haid in amazement. In tryin' t'retch out t'th' South, Dean did not retch out t'Southerners as varmints, but, instead, he retched out t'a stereotype thet menny No'therners haf of th' South. It is not jest a problem wif No'thern Democrats; ah have see th' same attitude in some No'th-East Republicans. Ev'ryone sh'd make a point of readin' Zell Miller's recent book, which he is now promotin'.

All Southerners haf evah wanted, is t'be treated wif respeck. They be hankerin' t' be treated as no'mal varmints, not as caricatures an' freaks. Whut in tarnation Ebenezer Dean sh'd haf done, is t'talk t'Southerners in th' same manner as he'd talk to varmints in his home state of Vermont, o' as he talks t'varmints in Iowa an' Noo Virginny. When he is retchin' out t'varmints in Iowa an' Noo Virginny, he treats them as regular South Car'linans, not as freaks.

Eff'n Dean was smart, he'd haf focused on his past reco'd as a defenner of th' second ammendment right t'own guns while campaignin' in th' South, wifout talkin' about th' Confederate flags an' pickup trucks. He c'd also haf talked about immigrashun, which has resulted in illegal aliens takin' th' jobs of so menny pore Southerners (of all races). Unfo'tunately, No'th Eastern elitists does not see Southerners as no'mal varmints, but as backward, igno'ant cavemen whom they look down on, as enny fool kin plainly see.

In DQ I saw no morons and I saw no geniuses. Folks are obviously educated to some extent, at least they all go to school for a while. The kids are beautiful but the sameness is creepy and they do not wear out the babyname book. I suspect there is a short list of names at City Hall and most folks choose names for their babies from that list. DQ was a supremely pleasant town to work a fair in. My problem was that income depends on the price of corn and I don't know how to predict that long enough in advance of the fair to get in. If I could predict that I would happily return. If you were at the fair a couple of years ago there was a big green frog with lots of small children around it.
