Migrants Poured into Britain after Ice Age
By John von Radowitz, Science Correspondent, PA News
Britain experienced a tidal wave of immigration as soon as the last Ice Age ended, new data has shown.
Previously it was thought that Britains repopulation was a slow process led by a few pioneering explorers.
Researchers now know that humans responded rapidly to climate change and moved into Britain en masse as soon as the ice receded.
Up to 20,000 years ago a huge ice sheet extended as far south as Norfolk. Then temperatures rose rapidly, producing warming weather than we have now.
Once the glaciers had retreated, people returned to what was then the British peninsular. Only later did Britain become separated from Europe by the English Channel.
Experts had assumed that for several centuries pioneering settlers filtered into Britain before the main reoccupation.
But combining the dating of artefacts with ice core climate information has produced a new version of events.
Archaeologist Nick Barton, from Oxford Brookes University, who led the study, said: The big question has always been how quickly, and in what number, did people return once the glaciers had retreated?
Now, with the benefit of large numbers of radiocarbon dates corrected against a highly accurate record of global climatic change of the Greenland ice record, it seems that reoccupation was almost an instantaneous event across northern and central Europe.
The findings are published in the latest edition of the Journal of Quaternary Science.
Researchers now want to know why people moved so quickly. They may have been drawn by new possibilities offered in the north, or something may have driven them.
Co-author Martin Street, from the Romisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum in Neuwied, Germany, said: It seems clear that people were following the herds of large animals, like horse, which expanded to occupy the continent during this period. Humans can be seen as part of that pulse.
Probably the Fomorians.
Why wasn't this stated properly?
Britain experienced a tidal wave of immigration as soon as GLOBAL WARMING BEGAN.
I'll check for an earlier posting, then do it if not.
"Researchers now want to know why people moved so quickly."
Couldn't have been the warm beer. Must have been those gorgeous English blondes.
The Beaker people.

Sounds like the Border Patrol was overwhelmed.
Couldn't have been the warm beer. Must have been those gorgeous English blondes.
My best guess is that they came for the English cooking.
So when was the English Channel formed and why?
Retreat of the Ice shelf meant rise in water level?
Curious.
I don’t think it was for the dental care.
Rise of sealevel, bursting of an ice dam, and maybe Karl Rove’s Time Travel & Weather Control Machine.
The moment Britain became an island
