Clinton Adopts Key Piece of Sanders Student Debt Plan (Free college for most)
NBC News ^ | July 6, 2016 | Alex Seitz-Wald

Extending an olive branch to Bernie Sanders and his supporters, Hillary Clinton on Wednesday will announce a plan to make in-state public colleges and universities free for students from families who make less than $125,000 a year.

Sanders made free in-state tuition a core plank of his campaign for the Democratic nomination, and Clinton and Sanders discussed the issue in their meeting last month, according to a Clinton aide.

Clinton often mocked that plan from Sanders during the primary, saying she didn't want taxpayers to pay for Donald Trump's kids' education. Her plan includes an income cap Sanders' did not.

The announcement comes exactly a month after Clinton clinched the Democratic presidential nomination, and amid an ongoing struggle between supporters of both candidates over what should be included in the Democratic platform....

Once again penalize those who work hard and build up a career or a business, those who marry, and those who save.

We wonder why fewer people work hard, marry, and save.

In fact, those who graduated or never went to college will be footing the bill for these brats.

That's easy. Go back to college.

How can the federal government or a president, somehow decree free college at state colleges and universities?

You are obviously unaware of the concept of the Imperial Presidency. Her Majesty will first require the colleges to set their tuition according to her guidelines. If they refuse, no federal dollars for their students. The colleges will play along. Then the federal government will pay that tuition.

This will all be done by regulation, or by executive order. No need to bother Congress.

For UCLA, “tuition” is about $11,000. The total annual cost though, is about $60,000, so with “free tuition” the student must still pay $49,000>

For UMASS “tuition” is $1700 and the total is about $25,000.

Ohio State tuition is $9100 and total annual cost about $23,000.

So when a politician promises “free tuition” it’s not necessarily “free college”.

When a lib says something is “free”, it’s time to grab your wallet and hold on tightly.

IOW, anyone not showing any signs of Climate Change Denial™ will be okay to go, otherwise, prison. Oh, and did we say 'free'? Naturally, that's a mathematical impossiblity. Phase one, raise taxes. We'll get back to on Phase Two. Just remember, prison is for you peasants, so watch your mouth.

It’s crap. Most couples in America make over $125 thousand a year EASILY. What absolute crap. So those of us not getting free college for our kids....my oldest starts in August then we will end up paying EVEN more for tuition. My wife and I are ALREADY paying 24K for freshmen year. We don’t think loans are the way to go......Grandma left some money for the kids as well.

Families with incomes under $125,000.

Yeah that is about 15 percent of America who were going to go free anyway. What crap. It should be 250,000 if they want to be serious.

It’s a shell game. A bunch of colleges are starting to require that you live on campus and buy a meal plan. One way or another you pay, they’ll probably just increase shifting people around between the campuses.

Yeah, make $125,001 and you’re screwed.

Yes my wife and I have a combined income over that amount. My wife is basically just working until our daughter completes 3 more years of university.

If this were to happen I would advise her to immediately retire and let the government pickup the education costs since they will be coming out of our taxes anyway.

“in-state public colleges and universities free for students from families who make less than $125,000 a year”

So private colleges are going to have a really unequal playing field.

What about the State U. graduate who has $40,000 in loans who graduated the year before Hillary’s plan begins?

Not everyone is going to get in who is qualified to attend college.

You’ll have arbitrary sets of losers/winners.

Since states will be involved, 14th Amendment equal protection applies.

And will it still be free for the fifth year if Junior falls sick for a few months or if Missy can’t get into a mandatory course?

What is the age cutoff? Will a 26-year old still be able to go to college free? Will a 57-year old still be able to go to college free? What about health insurance while at college?

Will I be able to go to state law school free of charge?

Will I be able to go to state medical school free of charge?

What Alex Seitz-Wald and NBC don’t ‘get’ is that the government already offers FREE education: K - 12. They’ll just extend it to K - 16.

Won’t that be fun - four more years of brain dead high school..
