Sugar Land mayor withdraws from (Congressional) race for DeLay's House seat
Houston Chronicle ^ | Aug. 21, 2006, 1:55PM | ERIC HANSON

SUGAR LAND — Mayor David Wallace will not run as a write-in Republican candidate for the congressional seat vacated by Tom DeLay.

Wallace announced his decision about the Congressional District 22 race today at a news conference at Sugar Land City Hall.

The decision comes after Republican party leaders from Fort Bend, Harris, Galveston and Brazoria counties selected Houston City Councilwoman Shelley Sekula-Gibbs as the party's choice to run in the November election as a write-in candidate.

No Republican will appear on the ballot because DeLay stepped down after winning the nomination in March. A court ruled the party could not replace him on the ballot.

The only candidates on the ballot will be Democrat Nick Lampson and Libertarian Bob Smither.

If I lived in that district, I'd be voting for Mr. Smither.

I was sure happy about it. While Sekula-Gibbs isn't perfect, having a pro-life woman doctor in the Republican caucus would be good public relations.

Based on Earll's track record, she'll probably be indicted the last Friday in October.

Hey....thanks for the ping to this good news!

My only concern is the length of her name:

Shelley Sekula-Gibbs

Would just 'Shelley' or 'Gibbs' be count as a valid votes for her?

I've wondered that, myself. I'm not familiar with Texas election laws.

It will take a lot of advertising (and free publicity) to get voters to memorize her name.

Good. Now if we could just push the Libertarian out. That never seems to happen, but there should be a concerted attempt to go after Libertarian voters and explain what a Rat-controlled House would mean. Even if they want Bush impeached for being a "warmonger," there is much that would threaten them under Speaker Pelosi, Chairman Conyers, et al.

If he had wanted Wallace he would not have run. DeLay has known for years what Wallace is/was.

Working the voting machine they have down there now is hell, if the website with the device is accurate, as to how it works. You need to turn a dial to select the box to punch. To do a write in, you need to turn the dial to the write in box, and then turn the dial across an array of the 26 letters, until you hit the right letter, enter it, and then do it all over again to input the next letter, and then again, and again, and again. If that is in fact how it works, I think it close to game over for the Pubbies this year in TX -22. (Whoever selected this machine must have been in a mind altered state at the time., or on the take, or something.) Folks just are not going to spend the time to play with it unless very motivated, and figure out the two step of hitting the write in box, and then inputting letters one letter at at time, using a cumbersome dial. I think antiguv posted the link to the place where you can play with the voting device on line.

Here is the link to the Rube Goldberg instant insanity voting toy. Have fun. It will take you about ten minutes minimum, maybe more, to vote fo the "Sekula-Gibbs," and by the end you will be quite irritable.

You're right. It will take way too much trouble to write in Sekula-Gibbs with this machine.

And I'm not sure I really care unless it's the deciding vote on who controls the House. I wouldn't even vote for her in a primary race given reasonable alternatives.

Lampson will steal this District for the Dems in all likelihood and will be resoundingly kicked out of office in 2008. It's a travesty, but there's not much that we can do about it now.

Rube would be offended.

I cannot imagine the difficulty older GOP voters will have with this contraption.

Actually, having played with this thing for a couple of elections while in Harris County, I can actually write out her name in under two minutes. Maybe it's a new world record or something. :P

When you don't vote straight party (as I never would and like most people do) and have to actually go through the usual Harris County (or Texas) ballot, you end up spending at least 30-45 minutes anywho, considering the amount of judges (usually about 30-40, most uncontested GOP) and the string of ballot propositions and state constitutional amendments to go through.

Just as an FYI, in 2002, I had to vote in 68 contests and about 55 contests in 2000.

But then again, I'm not one of those voters who is getting senile (not quite yet) and I actually like being in the voting booth for that long annoying the precinct chairs and purposely did the same thing in Maryland in 2004, even though there the ballot was only 1/3rd as long.

The difficulty of write in candidates is that voters usually forget who is running specifically or how to spell their name. If they spell it incorrectly, their votes don't count.

There is an easy way to fix this:

The GOP needs to make a lot of stickers with the candidate's named spelled on them. Than they need to be handing them out from now until the election and make sure they hand one to every voter that enters every polling booth on election day.

This is so idiotic. The Texas GOP is going to deliberately hand this seat over to the Democrats without a fight? They would rather wimp out than let Delay stand as the candidate?

Well, Wallace may be a backstabber, but I guess DeLay turned into a backstabber to get back at him. In order to satisfy his stupid fued with Wallace, he stabbed the Republicans in the back, and worse, his constituents.
