Sugar Land mayor withdraws from (Congressional) race for DeLay's House seat

SUGAR LAND — Mayor David Wallace will not run as a write-in Republican candidate for the congressional seat vacated by Tom DeLay.

Wallace announced his decision about the Congressional District 22 race today at a news conference at Sugar Land City Hall.

The decision comes after Republican party leaders from Fort Bend, Harris, Galveston and Brazoria counties selected Houston City Councilwoman Shelley Sekula-Gibbs as the party's choice to run in the November election as a write-in candidate.

No Republican will appear on the ballot because DeLay stepped down after winning the nomination in March. A court ruled the party could not replace him on the ballot.

The only candidates on the ballot will be Democrat Nick Lampson and Libertarian Bob Smither.

My dad was a very active Republican until the last few years. He thinks DeLay and local leaders knew he had to get out of the race but wanted him to wait until after the primary just so Wallace could not run.

Wallace has been planning this race for years and DeLay knew it. Wallace is a back stabber who took out the Mayor who got him appointed to his first council position. Wallace has money and is backed by mostly under the radar politicians centered in his church.

He does little for Sugar Land, and lets the council do whatever it wants then jumps in front to look like the leader. Only a good council has moved us forward. Wallace spends all his time on national issues to prepare for that Congressional seat he wants so badly.

WOW that's more then I've typed using caps and punctuation in some time! ;-0

Me too. A big fan of his, I voted for him many times. He lead the republicans in 22 to believe, he'd run if his name was not removed. He left 22 high and dry.

I suspect it's all about money. He's got so much left in his coffer for a legal defense fund....he didn't won't to use it to campaign against Lamp...now is that a rumor or is that really the truth?

I've heard conflicting answers as to whether he can use that money for legal defense. There are those who say he would have to establish a legal defense fund with separate contributions.

Interesting...I guess Wallace came on the scene after I left Sugar Land...I don't know much about him...except what I've read here. So that's the reason the Republicans had that meeting in Pearland and Wallace didn't show up...hmmmm...

I'm glad I'm only a bystander and not that active in politics any longer. What crappy stuff...yuk

Some say it's actually part of a prosecution deal. Dick DeGuerin is a phenomenal attorney. (Who else could get probation for someone who admitted shooting someone and then cutting them in little peices to destroy the evidence)

However "The impossible can be done but miracles are harder."

If he came to Tom and told him he was goin down but he had a deal worked out... that's about the only thing a lot of people can think.

I'm just tired of it now though and I am caring less everyday (not in the big pessimist sense just in the get finished with this current mess sense). It sucks all the air out of every political room.

WHAT A TAR BABY!!!

I will help Shelley all I can but in the end ...

but I hope Tom DeLay clears his name and then runs for president. I'll be the first in line to work for him

Ping.

Of course, it doesn't change my impression of the race, but perhaps it gives Sekula-Gibbs perhaps a tiny, tiny more of a chance.

I suspect Wallace realized that pissing off the Harris County GOP when they control the most voters in the CD, not to mention even more of the GOP population was not too smart if he intended on running in 2008.

After reading the dirt on Wallace, your assessment makes a lot of sense. It appears Wallace is a vulture that looks for situations to exploit for personal profit. Hopefully he will not profit from the CD-22 mess.

I'm upset with Delay for leaving 22 high and dry. Maybe one day, we'll learn why he actually did that.

He lost interest when Boehner was elected to replace him.

Tom DeLay could not go back to the House as a little fish in a big pond.

Ego, IOW.

I stopped my wild political activity....but if Delay runs for president...I'd become very active again....Delay did so much for the conservatives in this country...I'd love to see him run for president... ;o) And I'd work my ***A*** off to help him get elected...

Unless the Dems field a ghost write-in candidate with a very similar name.

Good news for Sekula-Gibbs. At least this makes the race Lean Dem instead of Likely Dem.

All they have to do is find someone named Shely Gibbs and the counting of write-in votes will be a disaster.

They could even find someone to change their name prior to the filing deadline.

Don't put it past them. Didn't they do something along this line (maybe in a primary?).

All they need to do is confuse the voters or at least the counting process.

Delay will never be nominated for President. After this screwing the GOP he will never be elected to any office. What a fricking bonehead.

He thinks DeLay and local leaders knew he had to get out of the race but wanted him to wait until after the primary just so Wallace could not run.

DeLay and Wallace are buddies. DeLay gave Wallace a heads-up that he was resigning in April so that Wallace could be the first to announce his intent to replace DeLay.
