.................................................................

The Poetry Branch has been in limbo since the prior hostess left FreeRepublic April 15th 2003. We've since learned that said hostess has lost her posting privilege. That being the case, and Jim Robinson having given his ok, I wanted to renew the thread.

FreeRepublic is blessed with many fine poets, and we look forward to seeing their poems posted on FR once again. There were many non-poet FReepers who visited the Poetry Branch for the camaraderie; we hope they will return.

I would like to invite everyone to visit and relax at Poetry and Potpourri. Hopefully you will renew old acquaintances for chatting, sharing jokes, telling stories, posting cartoons, etc. Everyone needs a place to escape from the everyday news, make Poetry and Potpourri that place.

Autumn Serenade

The sound of the leaves
Picked up by the wind
Crackling and skipping
And set down again

The branches are swaying
And the the kids laugh with glee
As they bound into mountains
Of crisp autumn leaves

Mom's tart apple cobbler
Laced with sweetened fresh cream
And pumpkins and scarecrows
Make a memorable scene

The harvest is ready
To be gathered in
Before winter's frost
And long nights without end

I'm thankful for the bounty
Set before me this day
And I thank God in heaven
For this autumn seranade

Memories Tide

Come with me friend, and sail away,
among time and tides of yesterday.
Remember when our fathers rode,
the sailing ships of long ago.
We steer among the stars this night,
across the memories floating wide.
And we will course of long ago,
tall greyhound ships and compass rose.
Come sail old shipmate, upon this dream,
our course we chart beyond the green.
With anchor raised and sails filled wide,
we sail this night on memories tide.

An airhead goes for a job interview in an office. The interviewer starts with the basics. "So, Miss, can you tell us your age, please?"

The airhead counts carefully on her fingers for half a minute before replying. "Um ... 22."

The interviewer tries another straightforward one to break the ice. "And can you tell us your height, please?"

The young lady stands up and produces a measuring tape from her handbag. She then traps one end under her foot and extends the tape to the top of her head. She checks the measurement and announces, "Five foot two!"

This isn't looking good so the interviewer goes for the real basics; something the she won't have to count, measure, or lookup. "Just to confirm for our records, your name please?"

The airhead bobs her head from side to side for about fifteen seconds, mouthing something silently to herself, before replying, "Mandy!"

The interviewer is completely baffled at this stage, so he asks, "What were you doing when I asked you your name?"

"Oh, that!" replies the airhead," I was just running through that song, 'Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you...'."

Good Morning, Everyone!!!

The troops were being taught to jump from a plane.
"What if my parachute doesn't open?" asked one rookie.
"That," said the instructor, "is known as jumping to a conclusion."

I am up late, Amy. Just now got mom settled. HOpefully she will stay that way for a little while. :) Sometimes she forgets what she is supposed to do in bed so she comes to find me to ask. LOL! It's so funny, some of their antics (mom and my uncle).

I will see you in the morning unless I think of something to post before then. Night! :)

Found this in my inbox and thought it worthy of posting - even if it's been posted before...

“I Wish You Enough”

At an airport I overheard a father and daughter in their last
moments together. They had announced her plane's departure and standing near the door she said, "Daddy, our life together has been more than enough. Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough, too, Daddy."

They kissed good-bye and she left. He walked over toward the window where I was seated. Standing there I could see he wanted and needed to cry.

I tried not to intrude on his privacy, but he welcomed me in by "Did you ever say good-bye to someone knowing it would be forever?"

"Yes, I have," I replied. Saying that brought back memories I had of expressing my love and appreciation for all my Dad had done for me. Recognizing that his days were limited, I took the time to tell him face to face how much he meant to me. So I knew what this man was experiencing.

"Forgive me for asking, but why is this a forever good-bye?" I asked.

"I am old and she lives much too far away. I have challenges ahead and the reality is, her next trip back will be for my funeral," he said.

"When you were saying good-bye I heard you say, 'I wish you enough'. May I ask what that means?"

He began to smile. "That's a wish that has been handed down from other generations. My parents used to say it to everyone."

He paused a moment and looking up as if trying to remember it in detail, he smiled even more.
"When we said 'I wish you enough', we were wanting the other person to have a life filled with enough good things to sustain them".

He continued and then, turning toward me, he shared the following as if he were reciting it from memory:
I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright.
I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun more.
I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive.
I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear much bigger.
I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.
I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.
I wish enough 'Hellos' to get you through the final 'Good-bye'.

He began to sob and walked away.

I just had to tell you this. One night we were sleeping and I could hear someone rustling around in my room. I woke up (opened one eye, rather) just in time to see mom grabbing at my husband's foot. She said, "Is this a banana?" OMG! I wish you could have seen my husbands face. LMAO! It must have something to do with growing up in the depression. She is totally fixated on food. I will put food in front of her and before she eats it she is asking for more food. I could spend my entire day just fixing something for her to eat. Not that she eats it...sometimes she just hides it under her chair and asks for more. I am just glad I woke up before she started nibbling on his toes! :)

GOOD MORNING EVERYBODY!

I posted this on yesterday's thread by mistake

Here's my attempt at a little rhyming,

(No, it's not the one I told y'all about yesterday that I was writing)

"FALL"

Good Morning all!

Happy Fall!

Don't let the falling leaves get you down

Remember this;

That Christmas is a coming 'round!

How's that?
