I finally went out and bought a bathroom scale yesterday, and found out that I have lost about 20-25 lbs. so far. I had no idea it was that much already, even though my clothes are a little looser, and my belt has tightened a couple notches. And on top of that, I'm feeling better than ever, have more energy thoughout the day, and have far fewer hunger pangs, even though I seem to be eating a little less now. I am truly a low-carb convert for life.

Three cheers! You are doing marvelous.Time to hear from all you folks or Atkins wanna bes. Success or failure we are hear to give and get support.

I have not been 100 percent so I guess I am not at all.
Today, Friday is my last day on Midnights thank you Lord!
I find all I really do is overly sleep so I will surely be rested when I go on to my shift. I work 1 month Midnights and 3 months 2pm -10 pm shift.
So things will start getting a lot more normal.
I just purchased a george foreman grill because I here it cooks pretty fast. Anyone out there with suggestions about it?
It would be a great time for folks to check in!

The Foreman cooker is ideal for wife and I. My favorite is boneless chicken thighs after a 2 hour marinade. We find it difficult to grill meat with bone in as the lid does'nt contact the meat.

Wife #1(aka My First Wife) just finished making the Atkins ice cream. I got to lick the spoon...

Wish I could help. I'm no good at cooking.

Gosh, I haven't been on it in 20 years. I don't even know where my book is. I guess I will have to invest in a new one since it looks like there is a lot more variety now, and I'm a diabetic. Is it still ok for a diabetic? You guys will have to help me make a list so I can get all the things that I will need. Since I don't get around very easily except on a scooter my husband does all the shopping.

I absolutely love mine and use it all the time, at least 4-5 times a week (a little less now that summer has finally arrived up north here). It cooks extremely fast, and it sears the meat nicely so it comes out nice and juicy. Cleanup is quick, too. Just a little scrubbing and everything comes right off the no-stick surface. I got the smallest size, but kind of wish I had gone a step or two larger so I can cook more than one item at a time. I've done steaks, chicken breasts, pork chops (boneless), salmon steaks, and tuna steak on it so far.

Update:

After doing Atkins for two months last year, I lost about 10 pounds. Then I went off Atkins and back to my old ways and gained it all back. Moral: If you have a carb problem (and I'm not fat, but now I'm in my 30's, and I just can't eat the things I used to, and I started to gain weight; I figured it was better to nip it NOW) you have to eat differently for the rest of your life if you want to arrest the weight gain.

So last week I went back on induction, and have lost 3 pounds the first week, without feeling hungry, but faithfully following the induction per the Atkins book.

For those who have trouble sticking to induction, I recommend getting Ketostix to measure the amount of ketones excreted; it's hard to cheat when you know the diet is working and you're in ketosis.

For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, please get "Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution" book. Also you can get some great recipes at locarb websites; I tried some out on hubby, and he (finicky eater) even liked them. Stuff like crustless quiche, meatloaf (no bread), chicken breasts baked with cheese and broccoli. Yum!

Robert C. Atkins, M.D. 1930 - 2003

Robert C. Atkins, M.D., was the founder and medical chair of The Atkins Center for Complementary Medicine in New York City. A 1951 graduate of the University of Michigan, Dr. Atkins received his medical degree from Cornell University Medical School in 1955, and went on to specialize in cardiology. In his more than 40 years of practice, he cared for more than 65,000 patients.

Until a week before his death, along with seeing patients daily, Dr. Atkins continued to champion the natural healing arts as a safe and effective alternative to pharmaceutical drugs and surgery for many debilitating illnesses. He stressed the importance of proper diet in concert with nutritional support to prevent and combat heart disease, diabetes and obesity, all of which have grown to epidemic proportions. As a pioneer in complementary medicine, Dr. Atkins helped to bring national attention and credibility to its practice. In more than 30 years at The Atkins Center, he offered patients the best of both worlds, integrating the latest conventional medical techniques with alternative therapies.

Dr. Atkins was the author of a number of books that promote controlled carbohydrate nutrition and complementary medical techniques. His original Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution, published in 1972, introduced the Atkins Nutritional ApproachTM. Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution (1992, 1999) has sold in excess of 10 million copies worldwide, is one of the top 50 best-selling books of all time and has remained on The New York Times bestseller list for five years.

In 1989, Dr. Atkins founded Complementary Formulations, Inc. (renamed Atkins Nutritionals in 1998), with three key goals in mind: 1) to provide controlled carbohydrate foods and nutritional supplements, herbs and minerals to a growing population of Atkins followers and 2) to generate funds to invest in controlled carbohydrate nutritional and medical research. Today, Atkins Nutritionals is a market-leading provider of supplements, food and information products designed to serve the millions of Atkins followers.

Dr. and Mrs. Atkins established the Dr. Robert C. Atkins Foundation in 1999, thus far endowed with $3 million in grants. The Foundation is dedicated to providing funding for research and education on the role of controlled carbohydrate nutritional protocols in treating and preventing a wide range of diseases and medical conditions. Unrestricted research grants have already been awarded to a number of institutions including Duke University and the University of Connecticut. In March 2001, The Foundation agreed to provide Harvard University with a $275,000 grant in support of controlled carbohydrate research.

As a leader in the areas of natural medicine and nutritional pharmacology, Dr. Atkins built an international reputation. He was the recipient of the World Organization of Alternative Medicine's Recognition of Achievement award and was the National Health Federation's Man of the Year. Dr. Atkins was also the cofounder and past president of the Foundation for the Advancement of Innovative Medicine (FAIM).

Among his many media appearances were those on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," "20/20," "Larry King Live," "CBS Evening News," "The View," "Sally Jesse Raphael," "CBS This Morning,", "Dateline NBC," "The Today Show," "ABC World News," CNN, "48 Hours" and "Good Morning America." Dr. Atkins' work has also been discussed in countless magazines

text tabLast week the media reported extensively on two new studies published in the May 22 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine. Both studies compared the results of individuals who followed a low-fat diet with those who did Atkins or an Atkins-type low carbohydrate program.

The results of the studies add to the growing body of evidence supporting the low carbohydrate approach and are consistent with the findings of other recent trials comparing Atkins to low-fat programs. In both of the new studies, the low carbohydrate participants lost more weight and showed greater improvements in cardiovascular risk factors than did the low-fat participants.

Despite these positive findings, media coverage was inconsistent. Let us give you the full story, based solely on facts, for each study.

The Veterans Administration Study
The research conducted by Frederick F. Samaha, M.D., et al, is one of the first studies that has looked at significantly obese patients. The 132 subjects weighed an average of 288 pounds—and many also had diabetes or the metabolic syndrome (a prediabetic condition), heart disease, hypertension and high total cholesterol. Half the volunteers were placed on a low carbohydrate program, the others on a conventional low-fat program. After six months, the individuals on the low carb arm of the study had lost more weight and demonstrated better results in certain cardiovascular and diabetes markers than did those on the low-fat arm.

Food and Mood Food and Mood - For better and for worse, what you eat can affect how you feel. There is abundant research connecting mood and food, revealing that poor eating habits can lead to depression, anxiety and fatigue.
text tabYou know what the problem is: You're depressed, anxious or fatigued—or all three. You know what the solution is: food. You're right, because there's abundant research connecting mood and food. What you eat can have a major impact on how you feel—and vice versa.

The High Carb Mood Trap
When you're feeling down—no matter why—chances are your first instinct is to reach for your favorite high carb comfort food. That food may indeed lift your spirits a bit, because eating carbohydrates can increase your level of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that plays a role in depression. In the end, though, the carbs are just a temporary fix that will probably leave you worse off. Why? Because while the pleasure of eating the food may cheer you up, and you may get a slight serotonin increase, those positive effects are far outweighed by the ultimate negative effect of the carbs. All those carbs may give you a brief energy boost, but within a few hours you're likely to experience a big energy crash as your blood sugar takes a sharp swing downward. How will you feel then? Depressed, irritable, tired, unable to concentrate—and the cycle starts all over again.

Success Story
Before and After Playing for Life - Rock guitarist Jason Shepherd lost himself in a world of nightime gigs and fast food, but after he shed 56 pounds on Atkins, he rediscovered his potential.

"I used to be your typical longhaired rocker. I stayed up until 4 a.m. and slept all afternoon. I ate nothing but fast-food burgers, fries and milkshakes, and it really showed. Fast food was my only happiness, and I got sort of a thrill just thinking about what I was going to eat next—pizza, burgers, fries, whatever I could pick up—or have delivered."

We buy it at a Winco Supermarket here in Eureka Ca. Safeway has it also. It is bottled by 7UP in Redding but I think it is a product of RC Cola...

Thanks, I will search some more. I've often heard Dr. Atkins talk about it as a better substitute to regular diet cola containing aspartame which does raise insulin levels and also pickles your brain.

This is my second day of induction. I have been encouraged to try it from the studies we heard about and from the positive comments from many of you! So far, I have to say I am excited. I enjoy eating real food and I haven't been starving at all. But I am just starting so hopefully, I can get beyond the 2 weeks. I can tell that the next phase is really not very restrictive except that the amount you must control is of the stuff we are normally encouraged to eat "freely" of.

Please add me to the list. Thanks.
