Every Valentine's Day our newspaper runs photos of local children, mostly under age 6 - ads taken out by their grandparents - and this year's crop of names includes multiple appearances of Kaylee, Taylor and Michaela (spelled several ways). Here are a few more: Kenadee, Kerstee (middle name Tayler), Jazmine (numerous), a little girl named Brooklyn Kennedy B___, Madisyn, Baylee, several Kylies, Cheyenne, Jordyn, Koleton, Jett (apparently a Travolta fan), sisters Ireland Shea and Kenadee Shea W___, Jourdin Taylor Y____, one poor child named Jaiyza Ja'niya Johnson, a little boy named Jagar, a girl named Jericho, Bristol, Cal-Andrew, Mahayla Maree M_____, Dacoda, Ev Rahzia Lynae G___, Helaina Moon Queen, a boy named Jarek Avery M___, Mercadies (?), Shaeleigh (sister of Raelynn), Rahja J'Hilyn B___ (a girl), and my personal favoriate, Bri J'aun Cortez B____.

My brother-in-law says he saw a show where two brothers names were pronouce Lamonjello and Oronjello, but were spelled Lemonjello and Orangejello. Also heard of a Richard Biter who insisted on being called "Dick." Then there's the one about the girl who saw thought the Hospital named her Feh-MAH-lay, after seeing the baby's sex indicated on the tag of her newborn.

Cripes, how I loathe those insipid 'inventive' names.

What ever happened to good, solid meat 'n' taters American names? For girls -- Mavis, Lurleen, Doris, Margaret. For boys -- Vic, Elmer, Everett, Gus, Lee Roy. The kind of name you'd be proud to sew on a uniform.

When the wife and I had kids, we said to hell with all that 'Brianna', 'MacKeNzye' and 'Logan' stuff. I gave my kid a real name: Chester.
