Cripes, how I loathe those insipid 'inventive' names.

What ever happened to good, solid meat 'n' taters American names? For girls -- Mavis, Lurleen, Doris, Margaret. For boys -- Vic, Elmer, Everett, Gus, Lee Roy. The kind of name you'd be proud to sew on a uniform.

When the wife and I had kids, we said to hell with all that 'Brianna', 'MacKeNzye' and 'Logan' stuff. I gave my kid a real name: Chester.

I agree...it drives me crazy the names and spellings of names the parents come up with these days, especially the parents in my age group (late 20s, husband in early 30s). My husband and I named our two children after family members...Cynthia (we call her Cindy) and Hugh. I never will forget after having our son, the nurses at Ft. Benning giving me a heck of a time for naming him Hugh. I mean they literally sneered at me. I love the names Cynthia and Hugh because they are different (by today's standards) and old fashioned, IMO.

I hope, at least, that Chester is a boy (?) LOL....

We just found out that the grandbaby we are expecting in June will be a boy. His name will be David Charles. Of course that doesn't really go with his italian surname, but my daughter refused to name him Guisseppe (my son-in-law's suggestion!)

Well, I hate to say this, but all three Chesters I've known in my life have been deemed "Chester the Molester" for no very good reason except it was fun to say.

And I wonder who could look at a little baby and decide she was a Lurleen. I always thought it sounded like someone was choking on their own tongue (sorry Aunt Lurleen!)

Margaret is coming back with the spelling Marguerite. (My Mom and Grandma (my Dad's Mum) were both named Margaret Elizabeth.) The third and fourth generation go back to the traditional family names to honor the grandparents.

I thought that “Lurleen” was actually a title that a woman earned after her fourth divorce.

You're pulling our leg(s). No one in their right mind would defend naming a kid "Elmer".
