This is our own corner of Free Republic where homeschoolers can discuss what curriculum we use, vent when needed, share our successes, compare notes, alert each other to things we find on the internet, and vent some more.

Happy Friday!! I'm all excited.. for the past week we have been tiling our livingroom. It's been a REAL learning experience (more like tile and error LOL)..It's really starting to look good now and I got the hang of it. I think I can now officially change my name to Bec Vila

I know what you're going through! Lst winter my husband & I tore out the carpet in the front half the house & put in a floating laminate floor! Took a couple weeks, but it looks great!

Tiling is fun. Grouting is the pain.
Here are a few sites I have bookmarked, concerning algorithms. They're fun to ponder and consider the practical applications.

Wow. Tiling your living room... I'm impressed! The best we could do was with those sticky tiles - the thin kind you just peel off the paper and stick down - in our kitchen. (Hey, we were on a strict budget, and those tiles can look nice, if you do it right). 90% through it, we realized we needed more tile, but the store had run out of stock, and - get this - the color and style had been discontinued by the manufacturer. So, for a few years, our kitchen tile stopped just before the counter. Ahem... since then, we've paid a contractor to retile the kitchen in ceramic. Tiling... apparently not our area of expertise. ;)

Reading all these great stories of flooring renews my desire to rip-up the old, worn carpeting in our hallway. I'm hoping that underneath it's the same hardwood as my kitchen (which is at the end of the hallway). However, since we're still putting the laundry/mud/bathroom back together after a painter rescued it for us, I guess that'll have to wait. Hmmmm, maybe I can "justify" it as some sort of relevant hs'ing project. My 4yo ds
is interested in tearing apart and building stuff.....

i have a question for homeschoolers using SAXON Math... i want to purchase the Math 1 homeschool kit; however, they recommend an additional separate purchase of manipulatives... can anybody tell me what the manipulatives are? there is no description in the catalog, and for all i know, i may already own something similar--as i have way too many manipulatives as it is...

Manipulatives is just a fancy word for things used to count with, or shapes used for teaching geometry.....that sort of thing.......
For some kids, the "cube" manipulatives can be very enlightening...... showing how all those tiny cubes fit together to form a larger cube...... you can buy single items like that at any teacher store though..... I never bought a full set.....just smaller things that I found to be more helpful..........
To: WhyisaTexasgirlinPA
thanks--in that case, i won't spend the extra 50 something bucks, as i have tons of manipulatives--cuisinare rods, cubes that connect, colored chips galore, colored tiles, multi-shaped colored tiles, etcetera, etcetera... my closets look like a teacher's store... i wonder what their (SAXON's) manipulatives can consist of that they cost so much--$53 or so...

I don't know.....but it sounds like if something comes along that you need to use, you will find an alternative........lol And sometimes, I think the kids enjoy realizing that not everything has to be plastic, molded, perfectly matched to use in an example......they see the creativity used in coming up with an alternative.........
