AMERICA - The Right Way!! (Day 521) [Remember the Trade Center!!]
Various News Sources and FReepers | June 26, 2002 | All of Us

Posted on 06/26/2002 4:18:31 AM PDT by Chairman_December_19th_Society

We will not tire, we will not falter, and we will not fail! [President Bush]

Good morning!! Do not let the victims of the attacks on New York and Washington, nor the brave members of our Nation's military who have given their lives to protect our freedom, die in vain!!

WorldCom discovered for the entirety of 2001 and the first quarter of 2002, its CFO was overreporting earnings - to the total tune over the period of nearly $4 billion. Arthur Andersen was the accounting firm; they claim their work was in compliance with SEC standards and that it was WorldCom's CFO that was withholding data from them. The Justice Department has opened a criminal investigation. A preliminary search of the Internet has not, so far, turned up any connections with the previous Administration. Give it time.

Martha Stewart is now facing a wider investigation into her stock dealings. She says she wants "to concentrate on [her] salad."

The FBI searched a home near Ft. Ditrick. The home belonged to a scientist with access to anthrax.

For AMERICA - The Right Way, I remain yours in the Cause, the Chairman.

Central New York , 30 minutes north of Syracuse. Hope we don't get the beetles. So far so good.

It refers to the Fed raising interest rates. Right now, if a small increase were in the cards in could be an indication that the economy is picking up steam. But since there probably won't be an increase, the economy is still cool and recovery is not where it was hoped to be by this point in time....

After all, the past 8 years with you know who, this nation is very fortunate to have our current President.

I agree, lysander, and probably so does Limbaugh, and oddly enough, this may be a reason for his sometimes/oftentimes expressed frustration with the Administration....

That there are some missed opportunities here in thwarting the liberals and/or advancing the smaller gov. agenda.

Sometimes I agree with Limbaugh, sometimes not...sometimes my disagreement is with the way he expresses it.

But it is the same for me with the President. Not total agreement...not total disagreement, either.

Time to get going here...

No. He is doing the letters to the insurance compaines and I am hoping he will swing them. But, you know how insurance companies are. When My wife was in the hospital with er heart attack the ins said they would not pay such and such so, we told the doc and hospital and somehow, other billing sas sent and it was taken care of.

Ok, here's what I found so far:

Peter S. Knight, Gore’s former chief of staff, managed Gore’s first bid for the presidency in 1988. In 1989, he began lobbying for the firm Wunder, Diefendorfer, Cannon and Thelan. Given his closeness to Gore and the rest of the Clinton administration, corporations now pay Knight upward of $10,000 a month to wield his influence with Gore. With the help of his new clients, Knight soon cemented a new role for himself as Gore’s “chief of fund raising.”

Since 1996, Knight’s various lobbying and fund-raising activity has been the subject of a Federal Election Commission investigation, a Justice Department inquiry and two House Commerce Committee probes.

Gore chose Knight to act as chairman of the foundation during Gore’s first vice presidential term. Three of Knight’s clients - millionaire publishing magnate Vance Opperman, Bell Atlantic and Fluor Corporation -- showered the foundation with $10,000 each.

Knight also solicited $10,000 contributions from foundations run by Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO), Coca-Cola Company, MCI Communications (now MCI WorldCom, Inc.), Time Warner Inc. and Microsoft Corporation (Chairman Bill Gates also contributed a $30,000 glass sculpture). Under Gore’s supervision, the foundation pledged to take corporate money only through their foundations, not from corporations directly. The $10,000 paid by the Coca-Cola Company, however, came out of the corporate account.

Thanks! This is great and I for one am going to start reading all this stuff on the packages. I saw a warning on a Tow Boat one time that said, 'WARNING, drinking clorox may be harmful to your body' and you guest it, it was on a list of things not to do---on a federal OSHA poster.

In re the potential loss of Amtrak story:

I don't think Amtrak is going anywhere; it's 'only' $200 Million to keep it running, and Congress has so much fun 'saving' unprofitable lines.

In fact, Congress is the reason that Amtrak is unprofitable: local Reps. and Senators demand that unprofitable lines stay running, but the subsidies don't cover the expense. Example: One line, the New Orleans to Los Angeles, gets a Federal subsidy of $350/passenger; everyone realizes that an airline ticket would be cheaper, but the Reps. don't want the line shut down.

Amtrak DOES make money though. The Washington-New York-Boston line (aka Metroliner) is popular AND very profitable. Amtrak would have a chance if allowed to shut down the unprofitable lines and build more Metroliner-style corrider services.

Here is a link to some background on it.

Oh well...

Yes, that is what seems to often happen. Admustments are made...

I do remember with gratitude that our medical insurance covered several thousands of the cost of our son's insulin pump, & initial supplies for the pump, with no problems.

Our part of the bill: about $700. Not bad at all.

Amtrak makes sense ( and cents) on the East Coast...elsewhere, it's highly questionable...

Yesterday afternoon, one of my friends called with a spur of the moment idea: that we go to see "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" last night...

WHAT a funny movie!

jtill - you were right - we laughed our heads off, and so did everyone else in the theater.

Nita - It's Greek ethnic, but you might substitute Italian ethnic, and find it very entertaining! LOL!

Dj - Prayers continue for your sister.

Congress and the government reward failure...

That probably is not going to suprise many on this thread. LOL! Just look at public housing and public schools. Why should public rail-roads be any different?

Well, they are saying that a Metroliner would be very popular in the Chicago-St. Louis and Houston-Dallas corridors, but somebody has to front the money to get them up and running...And they're never gonna do it while they are bled dry running these lines that nobody rides...

Morning all you chickens and roosters!!! ;-)

Chair...my brother works for WorldCom in Atlanta. I don't know if he'll be able to keep his job or not. I am betting not. Not to mention that all the shares he owns are worth zilch.

I was watching Neal Cavuto this morning and he said that given the futures and the problems with WorldCom and Cantor Fitzgerald, we can expect to see the number plummet right at the beginning of the opening bell, maybe as low as -250, which would put it at under 9,000 for the first time in HOW MANY YEARS? We also own WorldCom stock, but it's too late to get out of it now.

Now, I may be confused...but in the paper it said the "Clinton-based company"...but I am thinking that they are talking about a certain city, not a certain ex-president, is that correct?

...Congress and the government reward failure...

Well, yes, but what I was getting at is that Congress and government guarantee failure when they meddle in the operations of the businesses like Amtrak.

An analogy: K-Mart closed a lot of stores this year. If they were subsidized by Congress, every Rep. would be out in front of each targeted store in their districts, making political hay in front of Action News cameras, braying about how they are going to 'save' the stores...
