Socialists are moving immediately to squeeze Gov. Kathy Hochul on taxes — even as political insiders argue her re-election on Tuesday was owed more to anti-Trump backlash than to a surging left-wing in the Empire State.
The Democratic Socialists of America’s New York City chapter — which saw a record-number of its members win election to the state Legislature — will turn up the heat on Hochul over hiking taxes on the wealthy and other issues, including expanding free childcare and raising the minimum wage.
“I’m hopeful that Hochul has seen the energy, the excitement that can come from the masses of people who want and deserve a better government, and she takes those lessons and brings them to Albany, and is braver than she has been in past years in terms of standing up for working class New Yorkers,” NYC-DSA co-chair Grace Mauser told The City Reporter on Wednesday.
Jasmine Gripper, co-executive director of the lefty Working Families Party, echoed the NYC-DSA’s demands, telling the outlet it would take the fight to Albany during the upcoming budget season.
“We will only accept a budget that is equitable and taxes the ultra-rich so that working families can thrive and children have what they need,” Gripper said.
Hochul ran on the WFP line in addition to being the Democratic standard-bearer, but was never endorsed by the NYC-DSA, which has long needled her to “tax the rich.”
The far-left group even broke with its de-facto leader Mayor Zohran Mamdani after he endorsed Hochul’s re-election bid, accusing her of siding “with her billionaire donors while offering working class New Yorkers crumbs.”
Mamdani still attempted to rally his base to back the moderate incumbent, stumping with her in New York City and even crowing that Hochul “has embraced new ideas” during state Democrats’ election...

And so it begins. Coming to a Congress near you soon.
since the very wealthy around New York City voted for her, I can only wish the DSA good luck. They deserve it!
If you’re rich and you voted for the Rats, then I say “Pay Up!”
Do it. Go ahead Hochul. Drive your last major taxpayers out of your state. Run that sucker into the ground even faster.
No amount of taxing will be enough to save NYC. But that wont stop them from trying.
Excitement and energy does not trump economics.
Prepare for the law of unintended consequences to roar.
Leeches gotta leech.
And so she should — keep driving NY into bankruptcy & driving people out!
Maybe by 2028, the LIEberal/Socialist/Marxist/Fascist/Communist Democrats will have self-destructed and the 2028 election will set things right!
And have them flee to Texas? No thanks!
Anyone notice Health care stocks skyrocket? So much for government run health care! lol
My guess is people think the health companies will get even more government money
Where will they go? This whole country just turned in to California
Oh, please do...
What’s the difference between Texas and New York now?
Lots of Rich Folks have already left New York.
The ones still there have enough FU Money that it doesn’t matter.
Others will adjust their holdings, residency, and free time to avoid it all.
And as the “rich” look to other states ... tax the illegals.
Her and Andrew Cuomo already drove a large number of wealthy folks from NY City. Both, during their time as Governor begged the wealthy to come back.
If they moved to Texas, they might be coming back now.
There are still several states that have no state income tax. Florida, Tennessee, Texas, etc.
