In central Libya, the endless flat desert of the Sahara gives way to something unexpected: a jet-black ocean of frozen rock.
Covering more than 40,000 square kilometers, Al Haruj is one of the largest volcanic fields in Africa, shaped over millions of years by repeated eruptions. Hundreds of extinct cinder cones and ancient fissure vents rise from its sun-baked plateau, where dark basalt flows meet the shifting sands.
In this documentary, we explore the volcanic history of this remote landscape and how vast lava flows reshaped the Sahara, leaving behind one of North Africa's most desolate and striking geological monuments.

Transcript: Ghosts of the Green Sahara
This black wasteland holds the ghosts of a very different past. Between 6 and 10,000 years ago during the African humid period, the Sahara was a fertile savanna. This massive volcanic plateau acted as a natural watershed catching monsoonal rains. The runoff fed ancient river systems and curved deep wadis through the lava emptying into Lake Megafezzan, a vast prehistoric inland sea that once lay to the southwest. Neolithic hunters frequented these volcanic craters using the abundant, highly durable basalt to nap intricate arrowheads and tools. These carvings on the dark walls of the wadis remain as a silent testament to a time when this volcanic field teemed with water, animals, and human life.
Very interesting. Thanks.
My pleasure!

So interesting. Thanks.
This explains the water source for the crocodiles that were mummified by the Egyptians. Everyone thought they were Nile crocs but the DNA was the same as the few crocs that live in the remaining lakes across the bottom of the Sahara.
The money being grifted from taxpayers got shut off.
My pleasure!
Good call. I remember seeing an isolated small lake, shaded in a deep gorge in the desert, which had a croc population, no doubt inbred.

the deep question these days is how do we turn the deserts green. Because in order to terraform mars, we first have to figure out how to terraform earth.
The deeper story is that we will have two populations within a hundred years with two increasingly distince futures. 1.)mars/space 2.)earth. Each will need to expand to have a hope and a future. For earth, the answer will be bringing water to the desert because that will roughly double the habitable size of earth.
